are you serious? Phil has an AMAZING singing voice, go back and listen to Cowboys from Hell and Vulgar Display of Power. he just chose not to use it much in the later years. at least not in Pantera. Down on the other hand... as for this thread, Lee Dorrian of Cathedral has an awful singing voice, like if Ozzy Osbourne smoked 5 packs a day. and yet in Cathedral his voice is perfect. nobody else could sing for that band.

Shane MacGowan. That duet he did with Sinead O'Connor was sad. Here she is, singing her heart out beautifully, while MacGowan is belting out 'harmonies' that a drunk homeless man could do.

Give me a mediocre/borderline bad singer who has charisma and personality over Mariah Carey any day of the week.

However, on topic.... I'd agree with post-SwordfishTrombones Tom Waits, I'dd add Shane MacGowan and Amy Winehouse absolutely cannot sing! (check out any live videos, even when sober she cannot follow the music at all - massively overrated) Yeah, I was talking more post Swordfishtrombones Waits. I would definitely add Elvis Costello and John Darnielle to that list.

Can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet: Dave Mustaine His voice is probably one of the most debatable factors into whether one likes Megadeth or not. Admittedly, though, that band wouldn't be the same without it. What I came to post. There's a reason this guy talks so much during his songs. Love his music, but dude can't sing (especially live).

I've seen Cobain mentioned, but I think he sounds fine on the Unplugged album.

Surprised no one said Kurt Cobain yet. Me too. He was the first to come to mind for me.

Yeah, I've often heard Megadeth referred to as a band without a lead singer... but he makes it work for his style.

Mikael Akerfeldt. True he does sing occasionally (and does it beautifully), but the rest of the time he growls. He's amazing.

I personally think his voice is f***ing awesome, but I'll say Axl Rose. I know a lot of people that like the music but don't like his voice, but I don't think anybody else works for GNR. this is what i was going to say. guns n roses are actually the only band i'll sing out to with because i don't think i can do a worse job than axl lol.

Willie Nelson end thread. Double that and add Louis Armstrong but since he's dead he only gets a half point.

Mikael Akerfeldt. True he does sing occasionally (and does it beautifully), but the rest of the time he growls. He's amazing. So, the best "singer who can't sing" is a guy who can and does..? Though I agree, his voice is beautiful, and on albums like Watershed, I'd say he sings clean more than "occasionally"

But he growls more than he sings, and his growls are awesome and are definitely not classed as singing. On songs like Karma they really make the song something else. That one really pulls at my heartstrings, and I just don't think it would if it was sung normally.

Eminem. Well, he CAN'T sing. He can however rap. I think Eminem is a fantastic rapper and lyricist. I also think that he has written some really good singing parts. My problem with him is that his voice is just too whiny and nasally, especially when he sings. The thing is, he didn't always rap/sing with that voice. Sure, he's always been a little high pitched, but he seriously over did it on the last album.
