I was chatting to a friend today and we got onto discussing musicians and singers, largely those who while they don't have a great voice by traditional standards, know how best to use their voice to convey the emotion and feeling in a song in a way that makes them far better to listen to than a lot of artists who have a voice but very little behind it.
We came up with Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger and Johnny Cash, with Joe Strummer and Neil Diamond getting honourable mentions.
Can you think of any others who stand out?
And on the converse side we discussed those who have potentially spectacular voices, but totally misuse them, such as Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and Beyonce who's talent is beyond doubt, but who rarely sing in a way that utilises their voice fully, instead shouting, warbling up and down the scales not holding notes and just making noises while backing singers carry the song.
Any other examples of this phenomena and who would you prefer to listen to?

It's all very subjective. I think Joe Strummer and Tom Waits have beautiful, if unconventional, voices.

Conor Oberst. I have a lot of friends who like the lyrics and music of Bright Eyes, but they just can't take his voice. I understand that, but I find it incredible.

I personally think his voice is f***ing awesome, but I'll say Axl Rose. I know a lot of people that like the music but don't like his voice, but I don't think anybody else works for GNR.

Tom Waits once had a lovely, melodic voice. Who knows what happened?

Bob Dylan. It oddly works with his music and lyrics.

Along that same vein, The Mountain Goats. The dude has a FANTASTIC voice, but it's unconventional. Lots of people get turned off by it. Same with Julia Stone. Also, how'd this thread get this far without an Elvis Costello mention?
