I am sick of people praising HOGAN because he did it BEFORE Austin....WELL YEAH...because of AGE.
It just is not fair to give Hogan credit in that area (Without Hogan we would of never had an Austin argument, etc) BECAUSE Austin is younger.
Look at both performers, obviously both were magniicent, but all-around who had more talent.
It is not that hard to determine that answer.

Hogan had one long, glorious run, then intended to break out and become an entertainment star. His return to wrestling was due, at least in part, to his limited success in his second career. In his heyday, he was a workhorse on the house show circuit, but his exposure on TV was limited. His reinvention as Hollywood Hogan was a perfect storm of the right guy in the right angle doing his job really well. But, you could argue that his second run was an accidental byproduct of failing in his attempt to break out of wrestling.
In Austin's top run, he "carried the ball" on TV every single week. He was featured in 2-4 segments on every show, every week. After that ran its course, he found ways to be entertaining and sell lots t-shirts before getting into his current, second career. Physically, I doubt he is able to return for another run the way Hogan did. That isn't a knock against his star power. He just physically can't do it. Also, he may not return to wrestling because he'll have more consistent success in Hollywood.

Yeah, Austin's time on top being limited shouldn't be a point of contention. It was amazing he could come back at all after being dropped on his head.
Austin was my favorite wrestler from 96 until he retired and when I was a kid, Hogan was my most hated wrestler but he was the bigger star.

Look at both performers, obviously both were magniicent, but all-around who had more talent. It is not that hard to determine that answer. Hogan and Austin were two different types of wrestlers with two different types of wrestling personalities/characters. So debating who was the more talented is subjective in nature. In kayfabe terms Austin was the better technical wrestler(ring strategist) while Hogan was the better power/brawler wrestler. Hogan was matched against big power guys while Austin was matched up against on average against more normal size wrestlers. As I stated earlier, if these two could have hypothetically both wrestled each other in their primes than Hogan wins easily if the booking stayed true to history and precedent. A wrestler the size of Austin who was not maybe muscular as an Orndorff would have been no trouble for Hogan at all. Now please understand I am talking about WWE and not AWA or Japan. Both were magnificent but even setting aside the fact that Hogan had the AGE advantage the reality is that Hogan was way more magnificent than Austin was. Austin never was popular enough to transcend wrestling in the mainstream (and when I say mainstream I mean WAY more than MTV or WWE produced B movies) while Hogan did.

I know a lot of us of a certain age remember Hulk for wrestling but, I wonder how much of his fame these days isn't of his actual career but as "that wrestler with a train wreck for a life." I mean these days most of his mentions and exposure comes from his back issues, Hogan/Brooke Knows Best, TMZ and Nick Hogan's arrest. Honestly I think WWE/WCW might be 5 or 6 now and TNA even lower. Just something that came to mind. I look at your premise from this angle. If these issues were happening to any other star Hall of Fame calibre wrestler than the entertainment media would not even care if the wrestler was now living in his car basically homeless. The fact that they care about Hogan or even gave Hogan a reality show is a positive correlation on just how famous Hogan was or is and how they think much of the American populace still cares about Hogan. Hogan still has it better probably than many ex famous wrestlers out there whose lives are wrecked and who in all reality would make for more realistic human drama stories.
