With what we know now about the risk posed from chair shots to the head can anyone think of any matches that haven't exactly aged well and have now become somewhat uncomfortable to view?
The Rock vs Mankind's I Quit Match at The Royal Rumble seems downright irresponsible looking at it now. Especially considering that Foley voluntarily left his head completely unprotected.
In closing its amazing how dumb everyone was back then thinking that taking these ridiculous shots were somehow something to be proud of. I remember Jerry Lynn saying in an interview with Powerslam how he used to get ribbed backstage in ECW for always putting his arms up in front of his head when taking a chair shot. His reply was a simple "what would you do if it happened for real in a bar fight? exactly you'd try to block it with your hands", think that says it all really.

The Rock/Mankind one was brutal and unnecessary looking even back then. After like the third shot it's just like " Shit, Rock, stop it."

I always thought the Conchairto shot by Edge and Christian was a little too cringe worthy

I always thought the Conchairto shot by Edge and Christian was a little too cringe worthy Depends on how well it was executed. Sometimes it was a bit much to look at, but most of the time you could tell that they barely hit the guy.

I always thought the Conchairto shot by Edge and Christian was a little too cringe worthy It looked grizzly but I think performed it so they just clanged chairs together and made minimal contact with the head (although I can't be certain). I'm glad they both switched to the one man version which looks cooler and safer.

I always thought the Conchairto shot by Edge and Christian was a little too cringe worthy Really? If you were to ever take a chair shot this would be the one to volunteer for, you'd feel a gust of wind at best. Half the time it was used by E&C (even the one man version) it looked too damn fake.

In Foley's 2nd book he claims to have been pissed at Rock for months after the RR99. They agreed to 2 shots to the head, and it went well beyond that.
What about Eddie/JBL, or JBL vs. Meanie on Smackdown. I mean, does anyone remember Stevie Richards NAILING JBL with the chair? BRUTAL!

I can't watch any Benoit matches because he took some severely brutal chairshots to the head. He would take shots to the back of the head unprotected.

I seem to recall a match with Mankind... it was either against Bulldog or Shamrock, where they beat him down to his knees with a chair, and then side-swung to give him an unprotected chairshot to the side of the head and face. It just looked BRUTAL.

Not for me. I find they go too far out of their way to avoid it nowadays as it is.
Really, though, if shots to the head are banned I'd just as soon drop chairs all together. Shots anywhere else besides like the foot or something just look stupid.

I remember there being a match between Kane and The Big Show sometime around Summer 99 where Kane gave Show a huge chairshot to the head. It was like a home run swing IIRC.
Also in the first HIAC match, towards the end of the match Taker nails Shawn in the head pretty hard.

It just looked BRUTAL. I actually remember The Rock doing that to Shamrock once too, I think. Made for a visual where there was blood trickling either down Shamrock's temple or out of his ear. I watched the Hardys/Dudleys table match at Royal Rumble 2000 about a week ago and there were some awful chairshots in that one. I also remember HHH's baseball swings with a chair to Foley in the Street Fight and HIAC matches, where Foley actually ran into them. Ugh.

Yeah I can't stand watching chairshots like that these days. It pisses me off because a lot of the wrestling fans I know are all like "man thats gay they banned head shots", while I think its a great thing. Late 90s (other eras too but this is what I've watched) wrestling is barbaric and sadistic in a lot of ways I'm glad we're getting away from some things. No one thinks its real anymore, no need to try to convince people by having guys pound each others' brains to mush.

One of the nastiest shots I've seen was the TLC match on SmackDown. Christian pasted Jericho in the head with a chair. I don't think Jericho was even ready for it, because Christian was swinging before Jericho started turning.

Although I was a fan of the Rock. I hated him for a while after the I Quit at RR99. It always struck me as funny that he was happy to dish it out...yet I always remember he'd put his hand up to protect himself. So he knew it damn well hurt; but perhaps you get lost in the moment (which is dangerous in itself when it comes to this).

But don't forget that Foley was the type who could take a hell of a lot more abuse than most other wrestlers. He allowed the unprotected chair shots because (at least he believes) he can take it. If the Rock had the pain threshold that Foley has, then maybe he'd have taken them unprotected too. I'm not saying it would be the right thing to do, mind you...

In Foley's 2nd book he claims to have been pissed at Rock for months after the RR99. They agreed to 2 shots to the head, and it went well beyond that. I have to question that. Go back and watch the RR99 match. Not only did Foley take a hell of a lot more than 2 shots, he ran into quite a few of them intentionally. Had the Rock gone beyond what was agreed upon, I don't think you'd see Foley running into 3-4 in a row, and Foley would have ultimately been unprepared for several of them. I'm relatively certain that all those chair shots were planned, and I think they both realized they went too far after the match. After Foley started seeing how much it affected his family, he started shifting some of the blame the Rock's way, and has been sticking to that since. Just my thoughts at least.
