Honestly, Deadly Alliance through DC Universe is what made me a fan of the series - I played and enjoyed all of the games before that (even, at the time, the GBC version of 4) but those were what made me really come to like it. I'm getting the new one, but I don't expect to enjoy it as much as Deception and DCU.
Speaking of, I need to pick up another copy of the latter. I had to sell mine to buy something or other else, and not like it's too expensive.

I owe a bit to this franchise.
MK1, I remember doing Sub-Zero's spine fatality for the first time, completely unsure on what buttons I hit, I just ended up button-mashing and somehow, there he was, ripping his spine out. Being 6 years old, it was one of, if not the first, "Holy s***!" moments in gaming that I experienced.
I remember seeing the poster for the movie inside a Gamepro issue, and marking out. The movie is still one of the best translations from video game-to-movie, even if Goro's death sucked.
I also got my first kiss while playing Deadly Alliance.
Yeah, this franchise has done me well. I can't wait for MK9. It's going to kick some serious ass.

I also liked MK vs DCU, mostly cause it seemed to worked well with combat, and just needed the extras that Deception had for replayability to be perfect.

I pretty much have played all of them except for MK vs. DC. I remember as a little kid going to the arcades and seeing people playing Mortal Kombat. I took part in battling some of the teenagers who went there. Sure, I may have lost, but I had fun in the process. I was in the mood to play some old games a while back, but the problem was that I needed to have certain games to play them. For MKs 2 and 3, I would need Midway Arcade Treasures 2, and for MK1, I would need to get MK Deception, the Premium Edition. Also, I would need to order MK4 and Trilogy, if the latter would play on my PS3 anyway.

I seriously thought why is Goldust in this game in the tag team combat preview. If he hadnt thrown his net I never woulda guessed that was Cyrax

The very first code I ever remember hearing about for a game was the blood code for the original MK on the Genesis. My older brother told me about it and we messed with that all night, and marked out when the opponent fell into the pit (before we knew about Fatalities).
I still remember accidentally doing Scorpion's fatality in the Genesis version and not knowing for YEARS how I did it.
That was the greatest accidental thing I pulled off until actually just this week when I was killing time on MKII waiting for the WWE All-Stars demo to finish downloading, and ended up pulling off the requirements to fight Jade. I even won the first round, forcing me to pause and run around my dormroom and up and down my floor's hallway Jack Swagger style (keep in mind I had NEVER EVER EVER played against one of the hidden opponents in the classic MK games except for the Ultimate Endurance match in UMK3). Got my ass kicked the last two rounds though...
All that being said...Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is still my favorite in the series by leaps and bounds. It still pisses me off that the 360 XBLA got Ultimate 3 (and now it's been pulled down) and the PSN just got MKII. I so wish I could play an arcade-perfect UMK3. I'm not counting the DS version. I'm talkin on a TV screen, little bro as Robo-Smoke (threatening to turn into human smoke and then maybe or maybe not doing so) and me as Liu Kang. I might have to dust off the N64 and hunt down a copy of Trilogy instead (little bro would then switch to Noob Saibot).

I'm not usually one to get too hyped about games, but the new Mortal Kombat is seriously making me feel like a kid again and I can't wait to play the full game. Going back to the classic 2D gameplay is the best thing that could possibly happen to the MK series, as I always thought the 3D installments (from Deadly Alliance onwards) felt too slow and robotic compared to the classic MK style, and there was an even greater emphasis on dial-a-combos than in the MK3 and MK4 era games. Seriously, f*** dial-a-combos. The only time I've ever liked those things was when I played Killer Instinct, and that was back when I was young and stupid as opposed to just stupid.
I'll give Deadly Alliance and Deception credit for making me care about Mortal Kombat again, though, as the series was by all intents and purposes dead until DA came out and revived it. Of course, they also added a bunch of useless characters (f***ing Hsu Hao and all those guys from Deception... well, Havik was pretty cool but that's it) and things such as Konquest. To be honest, I loved Deception's version of Konquest. Sure it was stupid as hell, Shujinko was a terrible character and the continuity was... uh, somewhat lacking (and you had to practice all the goddamn combos to proceed. Not particularly enjoyable on an Xbox controller), but I really liked running around the Mortal Kombat world and talking to all the guys I remembered from the old games. Of course, prior to that I had refreshed my memory with Midway Arcade Treasures 2 and its nearly arcade perfect versions of MKII and MK3.
MK: Armageddon was just a horrible, horrible mess and we shall never speak of it again.

A,B,A,C,A,B,B (Get over here!!!!!!!) ;D I cant believe I still have that memorized. I remember back in the arcade days there were lines and lines to wait in to play MK2 and not to stereotype but you didnt want to face off against an asian you for sure wouldnt beat him no matter how good you thought you were. MK: Armageddon was just a horrible, horrible mess and we shall never speak of it again. No love for MOCAP? I wasnt really the biggest fan of the create a fatality in that game. I seriously just mashed buttons to pull those off.

I still remember it too. After you discover that code, how can you NOT put it in when you play?! I was honestly one of those people that got the games way too young. Glad I had parents who trusted I could put it in the right context. I had both the kind of mom and dad who if they saw my guys head get ripped off dad would reply "Hahaha! That sucks!" or mom would go "Oooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwww".

I don't know when I originally discovered the blood code (it was probably in the early to mid 90s), but I certainly never used it until I finally bought a Genesis (and its version of MK1) in 2009. I guess the code is just one of those things everybody knows, because I still remembered it despite never playing the Genesis version before.
Edit: I just realized this thread has a severe lack of Sub-Zero, Chinese Ninja Warrior:
I seriously will be using MK: The Album and the film OST as MK9 custom soundtracks to annoy my friends.

I liked a lot of the later characters, including Hsu Hao. Highlights of them are pretty much Havik, Kenshi, Hotaru, and Mavado, though.
