...would it kill you to have a world title on PPV without one of your "big stars" in it?
I mean what is it? 2007 since there was a WWE title match on PPV that didn't have Orton or Cena in it?

But surely the buyrates will collapse if Orton's not competing for the title.

Yeah, dumb WWE trying to give the most people what they want.

We actually calculated this out a while ago. Of the modern era (starting with Wrestlemania 21, in '05), all but two WWE title matches on PPV have featured at least one of Cena, Triple H, or Orton.
The two exceptions were Royal Rumble '09 (Edge vs. Jeff Hardy, with Cena in the WHC match) and Vengeance '06 (Edge vs. RVD, with the main event being a Degeneration-X match).

Yeah, dumb WWE trying to give the most people what they want. I know right? Who cares if those guys are are biggest merch movers and the most popular stars of their show.

Cyber Sunday 2008 was the last PPV to not have Orton or Cena wrestling in a world title match. If you were to include HHH as one of the major stars, it goes back even farther all the way back to No Way Out (February) 2007, and that's only because Cena was teaming with Michaels against Batista and Undertaker. It really is quite striking how much they've relied on Orton and Cena for title matches.

And having one WWE title match on PPV without them in it will cause buyrates to plummet and the WWE to go out of business, right?

Yes, they move the merch and are popular...but Cena and Orton are at the point where they're bigger than the title. They don't need the title to be over. Triple H has been at this level for years and he finally knows it. The two of them don't need to be in title matches to bring in the cash.

So because they move a lot of merch they should main event EVERY PPV? All 13-14 of them or however many there are a year now? Variety is the spice of life. Switch things up a bit and it makes people more hungry to see their favourites whilst giving others the chance to see if they can carry the burden of main eventing.

Yeah, dumb WWE trying to give the most people what they want. This would be great and all if the PPV in question wasn't the Royal Rumble match. Point A) Can try out new guys (And thus build up potential new mass merch movers and therefore create more money from the additional stock they move) Point B) It's the Royal Rumble. If you're buying it for the sole purpose of seeing who wins the standard one fall to a finish warm up match, you're doing it wrong. Point C) What pop will be bigger? When Orton walks out on schedule to fight Miz for a few minutes and likely lose in a screwy finish or if he randomly shows up mid Rumble, charging in and taking names?

The Rumble is the main event, so it shouldn't be a big deal to have Miz vs. Morrison for the title. Hell, Hardcore Holly challenged for the belt one year.

I just don't get why Miz/Morrison isn't main eventing the Rumble. They could have had that same match only better, longer and caught by more people. It makes sense if their match tonight was an appetizer for a big PPV match, but it wasn't. A major waste of what could have really skyrocketed both men.

I honestly think they're scared of not having either Cena or Orton in the WWE title picture.
Akin to one of those phobia's you need to seek help for.

Eh, there's still what, two weeks, three weeks to build to the Rumble? Even though I know it won't, things could change. We'll just have to see how they follow up on JoMo next week.

Well they'll likely come a time when they're both injured or out of action at the same time at some point, so they really should try to face that phobia.

That...is f***ing ridiculous. In almost 6 years, we have yet to be free of Cena, Trips, or Orton. WWE, please do something about this. I'm tired of the status quo.

I don't like that it's Orton/Miz. The don't gel that great all the time.
That being said...Morrison wasn't ready. And he'll probably have a way better showcase in the Rumble itself.
Who else could it have been?

Morrison is firmly cemented in the upper-midcard now and The Miz looks way more legit as champion. I still see no reason why that match couldn't have been on the PPV though.

Who else could it have been? I would have had a result that somehow led to all three people in the cage match getting out at the same time, leading to a Fatal 4 Way Match. But then that'd have two less "bigger names" in the Rumble.

Maybe I misinterpreted, but how would it be caught by more people being on the Rumble? Way more people are going to be watching RAW than ordering a PPV, even a big 4 one like the Rumble. I do think it makes him look like less important blowing the match off on free TV like this rather than a lengthy feud leading to the PPV, so I'm not arguing the overall premise, but the match will be seen by a lot more people this way.
