Yeah, Smoke on the Water is an outstanding song. Artistically maybe it isn't their best, but its a great song with one of the most memorable riffs in rock I meant in relation to the rest of their stuff. "Smoke on the Water" really isn't a good representation of Deep Purple's overall sound, honestly. Pretty much the rest of their stuff is far more artistically sound. I'm aware that it has one of the most memorable guitar riffs ever, hence why it's my choice. Many people only know Deep Purple for that riff, and not all the amazing blues rock stuff they did.

R.E.M.'s "Shiny Happy People", while far from their worst song, got popular thanks to people who didn't get the song's dripping sarcasm.
The band intentionally left it off of their greatest hits albums as a result and don't play it live.

Blind Melon-- No Rain. They hated the fact people misunderstood it and it wasn't a happy song, but rather a song about depression. So they changed up the tone, lopped off some lyrics and did No Rain (Ripped Away), much darker and got the point across a little better.
Oh, and not a fan, but I assume Primus and "Veronica's Big Brown Beaver" must fit in here. I don't know a single other tune of theirs.

The Offspring didn't always play goofy songs. They seemed to do kind of a 180 lyrically as they went on. Me and my older brother used to listen their self title album all the time.
Remember the song "Beheaded"? Nothing pretty about that
"Watch you spurt like a garden hose BEHEADED bloody mess all over my clothes."
Good times.

I'll be here all week.

The biggest offender of this is The man is a musical genius. He left making music to teach it because he could never escape the shadow of his one hit wonder.

Faith No More is a great example of this. In the song "Epic", they say the word "It" many, many times, and this song was their highest charting single in the US. (And their cover of "Easy" charted pretty well outside the US, but I don't think of it as a "Dumb" song.)
Their catalog outside of the song "Epic" is, well, epic! They've managed to make songs out of a lot of different styles of music, even though the band is primarily a rock band.

Blur - Song 2....a song that was basically them writing a mockery of what was popular in america wound up being their biggest hit in america. sad that most people have never even heard songs like For Tomorrow, The Universal, Badhead...all they know is "WOO HOO" What were they mocking, heavy music? Danzig - everyone knows Mother, while i wouldn't describe it as 'the dumbest' and it's still a good tune, most if not all the other songs off the first 2 albums blow it away.

FNM are my favourite band of all time so I hear you. I wish Everything's Ruined would have been second single from Angel Dust instead of what, fourth? Great band until their recording death, sad to see Album of the Year get slated so often when it's awesome.

They were taking the piss out of grunge and as mentioned before a lot of people who loved the song totally missed the point or were puzzled over the fact that the rest of the band's songs sounded nothing like it.

Oh, and not a fan, but I assume Primus and "Veronica's Big Brown Beaver" must fit in here. I don't know a single other tune of theirs. I never really looked into it, but I always imagined "My Name is Mud" or "Mr. Krinkle" being bigger hits for them. Also, not that it's a dumb song or anything, but it always bugs me that Alien Ant Farm will always be known for their cover of "Smooth Criminal." I bought ANThology after hearing the song "Movies" and was really moved by the whole record. Then "Smooth Criminal" comes out, it's a big hit, and then nothing they do after it makes even a blip on the radar.

Oh, and not a fan, but I assume Primus and "Veronica's Big Brown Beaver" must fit in here. I don't know a single other tune of theirs. It depends on your definition of biggest hit. The song you listed actually got the highest rankings on the overall charts, apparently, but I would say that several songs of theirs are far better known. Johnny was a Racecar Driver, Tommy the Cat, My Name is Mud, Mr. Kringle, and Lacquer Head all are more memorable, I think, but I did enjoy the hell out of that video.

Right Said Fred. "I'm Too Sexy" is their big hit, but really their whole catalog is fantastic.

Isn't the Primus song Wynona's Big Brown Beaver? Yes. And it was "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver", Dr. T.

Offspring-Pretty Fly for a White Guy really?! I know it was a popular tune, but I tend to think of "Come Out And Play", "All I Want" and other songs when I first think of them. It really depends on how old you are. Smash was one of the first albums I remember listening to, but I know a lot of people who are only familiar with the 2 hits off Americana (Pretty Fly and Why don't you get a job?). And man do I hate those 2 hits. Just terrible, terrible songs

Sure most people already hate autotune, and i love the song, but the lyrics really. They have better deeper music like I support this post right here. Europop is a great club album that I still listen to and "Blue" is one of the two worst songs on that album. "Your Clown" is my personal favorite off that record. Yes!Another Europop fan!I'm glad i'm not alone here!

I don't know why R.E.M are still so precious about it, the crowd would go insane if they played it live.
