It's all well and good posting stats, but while these show Orton as champ generally = ratings drop, further anaysis show stabalisation after the fact.
These ratings also dont account for other things on the show - sept-nov '10 for example was Cena/Nexus death time where WWE drove us all mad with their Cena over coming the odds crap again crap and Orton/Shamus being a second thouught.
Clearly the guy isn't a huge draw, but he isnt total poison either. Other things, including competition from other sports and the context of the shows produced at the time play a big part.
If, fter the PPV and the play offs, SD is still doing bad numbers with Orton as champ, then sure, I shall buy this argument alot more.
And I'm not even an Orton fan

I don't love Orton, but its not that he's a ratings killer as much as the entire SD roster was moved to Raw.

Or maybe most people just don't switch to SyFy.
It's not really the first channel I think of when I think wrestling/sports entertainment

From the quoted bit on the first post:
If it gives the reason as to why the ratings were lower, why are people placing the blame entirely on Orton? Because it's cool?
ETA: Last Friday was also the 2 hour Smallville's Series Finale. Now, that show is no longer the ratings grabber it once was, but I watched that over SmackDown, because despite my decade long love/hate relationship with the show, it's been 10 years and I wanted to see Clark become Superman!

It's raining outside. Must be Orton's fault.

There's been playoff basketball and hockey for a month now. The ratings have been trending down. The buyrates are trending down with the exception of WM. What do you think Over the Limit's buyrate will be? Will it break 150K buys? Smackdown cratered hard over the last few weeks and the adult demos are running away in droves. Can Impact be far behind?
But, of course, everything is great. They've done alot to drive away their adult demos and it seems like it's coming home to roost in buys and ratings.

I don't love Orton, but its not that he's a ratings killer as much as the entire SD roster was moved to Raw. But several Raw guys moved to SD including their supposed number 2 face just behind Cena. The only top face he replaced was Rey. Shouldn't the ratings have gone up? Orton is not the draw they think he is and people are pissed Christian isn't champ. Want proof? Timing.

I usually watch the first hour of smackdown, and then usually change the channel, but last week, the baseball game on tv was quite good (complete game shutout) that i couldnt change the channel

Ratings are low in protest to a very clumsily done title change.......and Game 6 of the Thunder/Grizzlies

I don't know that Orton is the reason for the ratings decline (although my opinion is that he is), but I will say that the nba playoffs excuse is garbage. The NBA has been on on friday nights all season and the oklahoma city/memphis isn't a marquee game and those aren't marquee markets. It'd be easier to swallow if it were the Knicks/Celtics.

Well thank god orton took the title from christian, if he was still champion with those ratings, I'd be worried.

Too cynical for me to think that, if the ratings go up next week, Orton won't get the credit?

Smackdown's main event scene is pretty weak. And there's not much of a storyline for it to speak of yet. Two faces who respect each other are having friendly matches for the title while Raw jobber to the stars like Mark Henry and Sheamus somehow butt their way into the main event instantly.

Well, first thing that needs to happen before we can see if this is right is to determine if this is an aberration or the new norm. It's not just a bad rating, it's the lowest of the year. If the ratings don't increase when there aren't games on, then we can say that is more likely the case. However, when something drops to new lows, then you have to look at what other possible things have contributed to it. Now, that's not to say Smackdown is all peachy keen with this. If they had a must-see show, people would feel the need to tune in. It just means you can't ignore the other factors. NBA playoff viewership has been up significantly this year, regardless of market. Yeah, the game would have drawn more had they been larger markets, but an NBA game that drew 4 million people over what TBS normally airs on Friday night isn't exactly something to be ignored, regardless of how much someone wants to blame Orton.

When did everyone become a ratings expert?
Posting up overall ratings, ain't going to win the argument. It's more complicated then that.
First, you need to post the "Segment" ratings, which show what parts of the show, Spiked, and plunged. If Orton's appearances are the reason the show is getting low ratings, this will prove it You'll also need other segment ratings, to show a comparrison.
Another thing to put into consideration, if any event is going to overshadow it, for example the NBA game, that was on.
Since I don't live in America, I won't know alot of Information, but what can help up with this discussion, is find the differences between:
* The Promotion and Advertising of RAW and Smackdown
* Access to RAW and Smackdown

The draft this time was particularly damaging to SD, which is odd since the whole idea of the draft was to give SD immediate help after Edge retired. I am still trying to understand why Del Rio was moved to Raw since SD now has no top heel and Del Rio isn't even booked for the PPV on Sunday!
Orton has never been a real answer on top. As a heel he is either too boring or too absurdly heelish, and his matches are full of nothing but headlocks. As a face Orton does nothing to garner sympathy from the viewer, since he doesn't even make for a lovable rogue antihero (Austin, Eddie).
Apparently the idea for SD was to ship Orton over there to replace Edge, which is laughable since Edge is better in almost every aspect of wrestling. Second, the draft otherwise pillaged SD's roster: Rey, Del Rio, Kingston, Swagger...all sent to Raw. In their place SD got Sheamus (horribly buried on Raw of late), Mark Henry (was going nowhere on Raw), Sin Cara (unproven and not as over as Rey), Daniel Bryan (largely buried on Raw), etc.
I'm amazed that anyone could seriously say SD is the better show right now.

Next time Norm McDonald is on Conan O'Brien I hope Randy Orton is also a guest so Norm can say if you're the Smackdown you know what a good name for it would be.. box office poison. Now take that to the papers. Norm is going to be on Conan's show tonight. lol But no Orton. Orton as champion always causes a ratings dip, I thought everyone knew that? He makes a better chaser than a champion.
