Yea, no one here is freaking out or anything, but most of us had never experienced an earthquake before now. It was just weird, especially considering that on the east coast, it takes one a while to actually conclude that an earthquake is, in fact, hitting.

I'm not surprised how overblown this is. The media tends to make things seem a lot worse when it hits the northeast than when something similar hits anywhere else. Yeah I know what you mean. It's blown way out of proportion. I didn't even feel nothing at all. My dad was screaming DID YOU FEEL THE HOUSE SHAKE!? since he was outside and he said my neighbors said that they felt shaking in their house. I was just like umm...no? Since I had no idea what he was talking about.

Yeah, because nothing ever happens here weatherwise besides snow, which isnt anything. So when a Hurricane actually hits New Jersey, or Tornado's tear some shit up, or theres an earthquake every once in a blue moon its kindof a big deal.

Didn't feel it here in Kentucky, but hear some reports about some who did.
i'm only concerned for three reasons:
1.) My cousin in DC who just moved to Baltimore. I have not heard if the Amtrak lines are back up yet, so he may be stuck in DC overnight.
2.) Looks like Washington National Cathedral sustained some damage, so that is a shame.
3.) I am worried that this might be a trigger quake for the New Madrid fault. Given it has been 100 years since the last significant quake on the fault, it's a little worrisome. And the last time New Madrid went off, the Mississippi flowed backwards, people.

Bummed that the rumble I felt was an Earthquake and not the Graboids from Tremors. I was prepared to pole vault out of town.

Yeah, because nothing ever happens here weatherwise besides snow, which isnt anything. So when a Hurricane actually hits New Jersey, or Tornado's tear some s*** up, or theres an earthquake every once in a blue moon its kindof a big deal. I understand that this stuff is rare for you up there, and if it was a big deal on news stations and in the papers there, that would be completely understandable. But a 5.4 earthquake really only warrants the level of coverage nationwide if it takes out the Brooklyn Bridge or something. This thread makes it seem as though the people in the Northeast didn't even think it was a big deal themselves, but nationwide they treat it like New York was just attacked by the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. It was a small earthquake that did little damage but was felt by a wide area because of geography, it doesn't really warrant the news orgasm that it's getting. An earthquake of that magnitude should be a brief mention outside the affected area. It'd be like if they did all-day coverage on every national news outlet because Austin, Texas got an inch of snow (although even though the latter is just as rare, that'd never be given the same level of coverage).

I felt it in my area. Apparently since the epicenter of this quake was around 40 miles northwest of Richmond, VA, and I live in Glen Allen just north of there, I was practically near the center of the action. It was quite the fascinating experience if you ask me. That earthquake was the first time I saw both "5.9" AND "Impact" in the same sentence. Took me a couple of seconds to get it. Brilliant, exceptional even.

8 pages, and I'm the first to post it. Yeah, it's technically on the L.A quake from 94, but it still works. It's a shame there's not show like Animaniacs to do a bit like this anymore.
Seriously, I hope everybody's OK.

I'm near Pittsburgh, and we got a rumble here, but I didn't notice until I saw it on the news.

I'm sure it has already been stated but there was a 5.9 earthquake with an epicenter of Mineral, Virginia. I live in Maryland so we felt it pretty strongly. I thought it was pretty awesome, considering no one was hurt. Our house shook a lot but it died down really fast.
My poor bf though works in TSA at the Baltimore airport and they were in the middle of a bomb scare at the time and didn't really come to the conclusion of earthquake right away.

I live in Virginia and I didn't even know about it until my mom told me. Maybe because I was mowing the lawn and I wasn't paying attention to the rest of the world.
