Can you recall any video game moments that scared you or really surprised you? One of the first times I can recall feeling like that playing a video game (and something that scared me for years) was Scorpion's Fire Breathing Fatalities in Mortal Kombat.

Almost any Scarecrow moment in Batman: Arkham Asylum.
For some reason, beating up Carnage's face in Spiderman: Shattered Dimensions disturbed me.
I admit it, many times Jason scared the hell out of me in the original NES Friday the 13th game.

"I hear it's amazing when the famous giant purple stuffed worm in flapjaw space, with a tuning fork, does a raw blink on Hairi Kairi Rock! I need scissors!! 61!"
That is all.

That water level in Mario 64 creeped me out. YES. f***ING SPOOKED MY GUTS OFF, MAN. And we can't forget the dog jumping through the window in RE1. Or the first time Nemesis pulled a Kool-Aid man on you in RE3.

The damn giant croc from Resident Evil 2. It scared the s*** out of me to the point where my friend had to cover for me and play through the part.

Can we use plot twists as surprises? If so, the Darth Revan reveal in KOTOR is a pretty good surprise.

"I hear it's amazing when the famous giant purple stuffed worm in flapjaw space, with a tuning fork, does a raw blink on Hairi Kairi Rock! I need scissors!! 61!" That is all. Oh god yes. The AI's slow degradation over time was more nightmare fuel than I think people gave it credit for. It still unsettles me. While on the subject of Metal Gear, remember the scene from Metal Gear Solid where you're on the lift? And Otacon quips how weird it is that the capacity alarm went off? AND THEN THE EXTREME CLOSEUP ON HIS FACE AS HE SHRIEKS THAT YOU NEED TO GET OUT OF THERE? Freaked me right the f*** out the first time I saw it. xD Very well executed, one of the few jumpscares I actually love. I'll also toss in my hat for the RE1 dogs. Ugh. Played that scene the first time in my old house (very old design), it had a sunroom. A sunroom is a room which is practically nothing but windows. At night. Yeeeeah. Birds and bugs and stuff had a tendency to smack into them. This happened not too long after that. I don't think I slept too well after that.

Opening to Dead Space 1, gotta get out of there!!
The trunk with something in a bag in Resident Evil 4 before you meet the last spiky regenerator. (Oh and Regenerators in general are creepy.)

Also a really strange one, but back when I was a wee lad in the early 1990's when we first got our Genesis, I was TERRIFIED of Dr. Robotnik at the end of Green Hill Zone act 3 on Sonic the Hedgehog. I think it was the menacing music and unnatural movement of the ball and chain, and the odd strobing effect it had as it swung. I got over it not too long after (was well on my way to Marble Zone by like Kindergarten or First Grade xD), but good grief it terrified me the first time I ever saw it. One of those things where you're tiny and young and are suddenly freaked out and have no idea why. @_@

Pretty much every 5 minutes in Dead Space. Was the only game I played that legit freaked me out.

First Witch in Left 4 Dead Yes! She's freaking scary, I hated accidentally walking into her. Something that really scared me when I was younger was the first time I came across Missingno in Pokemon Red. It looked so crazy and was so messed up. I screamed, dropped my gameboy and got my brother to deal with it from then on.

Everyone says the dogs in RE1. That was just a jump scene. What really kept me up at night was the first zombie you see...the way the camera zooms into his face, the way you don't know at first what it is until it slowly turns around and stares at you with those souless eyes, the realization that you're pretty much f***ed.
I think RE1 was the first video game that gave me a nightmares, because of that scene.

I forget if it's a machine gun or a shotgun in Bioshock, but you pick up this gun in this calm, empty room...then the lights get hit and there's splicers all over the place from out of nowhere.

As mentioned earlier. The elevator scene from MGS1 and Colonels breakdown in MGS2 ( funny story. The first time I played through this, when Colenol tells you to turn off the console, I did, thinking something will happen. Like the control switch scene from Psycho Mantis's boss battle from mgs1. Sadly, all it does is turn your game off)
But the scariest VG moment is Sonic's drowning music. Still sends a shiver up my spine.

I remember not wanting to play the RE games at all because I freaked out by the surprises and enemies.
