To quote Brock Sampson...this is getting stupid. This will have absolutely no effect. I can go 24 hours without wiki no problem anyway. You are probably well-versed in the internet, which means you probably know something about SOPA/PIPA. You're not the target of this campaign. The campaign is aimed at people who spend 90% of their internet time on Facebook, Yahoo and Google. It's the less-wired folks who probably aren't aware of the pending legislation who are the people they want to reach.

Yeah, the internet is FULL of people who aren't exactly up on all the things happening with online laws. They just do their basic stuff and get out. They aren't going to understand/care about this until they realize what it could mean. I'm all for it.

So, even with SOPA apparently shelved, this stuff's still happening? damn. They want it d-e-a-d dead dead dead. Yeah, they basically want it killed with fire and never spoken of again.

It's also a good way to make sure people don't get complacent and are reminded of how terrible SOPA and other bills like it would be. Just because it's dead for now doesn't mean it, or something similar, won't make a comeback in a non-election year. The MPAA and RIAA are persistent cockroaches like that.
And last I heard, the less-extreme-but-still-horrible Senate equivalent, PIPA, is still hanging around. And there's also ACTA lingering around, which would effect EVERYONE as it's an international thing.

I've gotta admit, while I'm against it I don't think PIPA'd really affect me all that much comparatively and don't really mind its existence.

Remember that scene in The Simpsons where Marge censors Itchy and Scratchy and it causes a montage of all the children actually going outside and playing?
...That still wont happen. But it'd be a surreal image.

Time to give my students a research assignment. PANDEMONIUM! It would be funny if teachers nationwide did this on wednesday. Libraries and bookstores would be PACKED.

Man I would totally do that if I had actually gone through with pursuing a teaching career before the opportunities here dried up like a desert. A one-two page paper due at exactly the minute Wikipedia goes back up. ;D They'd have to be emailed of course.

SOPA should pass if it means the end of Facebook.

Am I the only person who thinks this is going to backfire in Wikipedia's face? A lot of people are going to be pretty steamed over this, and there's a fair share of people who are unwilling to accept their reasoning for doing it. Wikipedia needs to decide if it is really worth upsetting a large portion of their online support network and general fan base to protest a bill that is slowly losing most of its support in Washington and is currently five-and-a-half-feet under. It's going to make a lot more people aware of whats going on who otherwise would have continued there day to day activities oblivious, which is a good thing.

I can't see it having much effect. Where else are people going to go? Wikipedia is (least to my knowledge) the only website of its kind. People will keep using it because there is no better alternative.

Wikipedia should run a special Daniel Clamp-style "end of civilisation" video.

If so that's fantastic, THAT'S how you make a statement. Massive respect to Mozilla and Google if they're going to go black as well
