So, even with SOPA apparently shelved, this stuff's still happening? damn. The bill shouldn't just be shelved or downtoned, it should be as dead as it can get, to the point where it's never even considered doing something similar again. Been following the developments and I'm glad they've decided to go this route. If only Google and Facebook were willing to help out too to ensure a result, but they won't, even if it's in their best interests in the larger picture.

Never mind that comment now, since the bill is back on for next month, and the MPAA are calling this a publicity stunt.
We need to hit this f***er hard.

the MPAA are calling this a publicity stunt Well when sopastrike.com is proudly calling it the biggest internet protest ever and claiming 10K sites are participating (when a few are significant)...it kinda does seem like one

Since this has gotten zero publicity from the general media before Wikipedia announced. I say: GOOD! Was the main story on abc.net.au/news (a major government owned media outlet in Australia) yesterday, and still among the headlines today. So at least there is a some more awareness in Australia now.

But most of these politicians have already "bragged" about not being Internet users. I reiterate...stupid move. Edit: Seems wordpress will shut down so that means no FAN updates. That they are unaware about the issue and technologies that they're trying to legislate is exactly why this move is being considered. They see the internet as simply another media branch like radio or TV instead of the information entity that it not only is, but was designed as. The only reason these people are in office and support legislations is by not pissing off just enough people, but that changes if enough regulars are willing to actually get informed and express to them how terrible something is. Not enough are willing to do that, but getting a message out where they might go everyday is a worthwhile option.

The main problem I have though is that people are making it seem like you will go to jail and all at worst. That's absolutely false. That's really the claim that bothers me.
In addition, things get taken from YT but get put back. Even if this did get passed in it's alleged worst case scenario, the worst that will happen will probably something like content matching.
I also highly doubt they'd go after sites like this anyways. The sites that should be worried would be file sharing places like Limewire and Kazaa. They actually HARM the internet.

What the hell, man? Where am I supposed to edit in hilarious poop jokes into the bios of famous leaders? Way to deprive the world of Margaret Fartcher and Cardinal Richepooh.

Even if the worse scenario is content-matching (which it isn't, from the bill's explicit language) that's still a LOT of content coming through sources that are not responsible, and there'd be a million ways for these companies to manipulate it so that their content shows up on a site that they want to target. It's not about piracy or worrying about not being able to access illegal content, it's about these companies trying to change the very structure of what the internet is supposed to be to fit their criteria with only the support of huge corporations. The web is the only haven left with free and universal information flow, and because of that it's one of the few industries that can keep growing and evolving. You start trying to regulate it, you're going to piss off a lot of people that not only use it, but understand what it does for the world.

I think you're a little misinformed about the what the bill could actually do because of its ambiguous language. Websites that have a large number of user-generated content (facebook, youtube) could be taken down if a USER posts copyrighted material. The user who posted the material could also face time in jail. I don't want to post any videos because of the politics related to this, but there is reason to be alarmed at SOPA being passed. Also, if you're interested, you should go to youtube, search "stop sopa," and click the first video. You'll find out some interesting things about the distributors of Kazaa and Limewire.

As others have pointed out, you were a little underinformed when you made this statement. The thing that bothers me, however, is that you are forgetting exactly who is pushing for this to go through. You honestly think that these are the people who won't abuse this if it passed? These are the same people who regularly sue the parents of young children who download $6 worth of songs for millions of dollars because the laws they previously got passed by buying off uninformed politicians say that they can. You cannot possibly think that these are the same guys that are not salivating at the opportunity to abuse this. I am sure they have already had meetings on exactly how much money they think they can extort out of Facebook and Google in particular.

Will the blacked out sites explain why theyre blacked out or will it just be a black screen? If its the latter then it wont be a very effective protest .

Yeah, if they're just a 503 or something with no explanation, they're not going to accomplish very much. You need to inform the public WHY upfront or it's just going to make people angry for the wrong reasons.

"The 2012 English Wikipedia blackout is a scheduled[1] blackout of the English Wikipedia for 24 hours on 18–19 January 2012. In place of articles, the site will show only a message opposing the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA), legislation that has been deemed a threat to the existence of Wikipedia."
