It would be bad if Google and Facebook pretty much went on strike. The worst part is if this happens, we are the ones getting the most screwed. The Government could still run with no internet, The economy can't.
I doubt it will pass. Everyday it loses support and companies like Sony and Nintendo who were fully behind it at the start have now went anti with it. Google and others are big enough players that if they do this, it could very well kill the economy. If this all goes down the day if passes, I'm hiding because the response of this will only lend in to chaos. Just for the sake of safety of people, don't pass this bill.
An internet strike would be a catastrophic way to start the year.

Ok....I may get a Warning for this....and if so it was for a good cause.
1. This SOPA thing is beyond politics.....or rather being against it is BEYOND Politics. They're talking about simply shutting down hundreds of sites for what has been basically "Fair Use" as well as legitimate Piracy issues.
That Guy With the Glasses would be gone....
Team Four Star would be GONE
Botchamania would be a fleeting memory...
Our own Freakin' Awesome Network would be GONE.
Simply put if SOPA Passes....anyone that uses anything copyrighted in any form without compensating the companies is a target.
Folks......this isn't just about partisan politics, this isn't about who's right and who's wrong....people....this is about .... something much more. We may lose the comeradrie that we've shared these many years because the laws of the land cannot adequately adapt to the changing face of technology.
This SOPA thing will not stop the pirates, that's the aim isn't it? That's what it all boils down to in the end, the entertainment companies want the money that they're losing.
I've got news for you folks.....The Genie's out of the bottle.....if people know you can get the stuff for free they'll do it until you give them something worh paying for.

Ya know, even if this did pass I couldn't see the Supreme Court not shooting it down.

Ya know, even if this did pass I couldn't see the Supreme Court not shooting it down. It clearly violates the Tenth Amendment. I'm shocked that's it's even got this far.

I think they should not only do it ASAP, I think they should go through with it every year, and that they should all replace their pages with a single page that tells all who visit the mission statement and explain SOPA and everything wrong about it as well as everyone who supported it. No one should ever forget that this bill was considered. Ever.

No one should ever forget that this bill was considered. Ever. This is what I was going to suggest. Not only that, but I would love for that page to provide a link to videos like the two posted earlier. Doing something like that on such a grand scale will not only get attention, but those videos will then get airplay on legitimate news programs and websites.

Yeah I hope this doesn't pass either(and not just saying that as a writer for FAN, thus someone what is in a very good position to be in legal trouble if SOPA passes), this thing would without a doubt literally kill our economy. The out of touch old fools who came up with this bill and support this bill don't realize just how important the internet is to not just the American economy, but the world economy. They pass this, they'll be responsible for the biggest global economic destruction since the global stock market crash of the late 1920s. I mean f***, nearly everything we do in society now is connected to the internet in some way.
I hope logical minds prevail, and if this is passed it either gets swiftly vetoed or declared unconstitutional, and then I'll patiently wait for people born in the 70s-onwards(especially the 80s-onwards) to take up jobs in politics. We need people who were born into the technology/internet age in the government badly.
*ducks under covers, hoping to avoid a warning*

Kurt Vonnegut once said that true terror was to wake up and realize that your high school class is running the country. Since then, this current political era reminds me of a less heady, though relevant quote from none other than the movie Hellraiser: "We have such sights to show you..."
So it goes...

I'm glad the mods are keeping this open, even though it treads the political line. I mean, worst case scenario, we won't have a forum to have non-political discussions in, right?

You guys should check out this video as well. Slight language warning, but it is very eye opening. I learned stuff from watching this, I'm sure you guys will too(plus it has some funny bits in it).

As someone said above, this is something that transcends political dick-waving contests. This is something very anti-democratic (as in democracy itself, not the Democratic Party) and it's something that people from all over the political spectrum can find common ground on. Liberals, conservatives, progressives, libertarians, centrists, socialists, anarchists, etc. A lot of people have been reconsidering or outright removing their support, mainly due to the public backlash against SOPA. If Google, Facebook, Twitter, and other sites do a blackout, it brings the issue to the forefront. Millions of Americans who use these sites everyday will be informed about the danger SOPA presents. And once the information is out and widespread, supporting this bill would be suicide. Especially in a major, presidential election year.

I've been keeping a close eye on this for a long time. This Bill is sort of like DMCA which is something that was passed a while ago before people knew how important the internet was. It has caused a ton of problems and fraudulent claims.
This new one SOPA is sort of the same thing but a hundred times worst. It could pass but I honestly don't see it happening for the fact that I have never seen a bill get railed against this hard in my lifetime.
If it does pass there will be lawsuits out the wazoo and it will literally plug up the courts.

Dont forget the educational sites that could be affected too (i'm mainly thinking of sparknotes, but there are likely others as well).

I can't be the only who thinks this whole thing is a GIANT overreaction can I?
Wish I had that essay a college friend of mine made. He made a pretty darn good case that it won't be the end of the world.

As for the 'nuclear option', I agree that this should be done. No warning, no hints, no 'hey, if you wanna check your email on Thursday, forgetaboutit...' posts, just BAM, warning page.
Also, a thought: I've heard that some of these politicians have no computer/internet experience, but there are people in their staff that do. Many politicians have FaceSpace/MyBook pages and Twit feeds and so on that were set up by their staff/advisers/supporters so that they could 'get their message out' to the public easier.
So, why not start boycotting these politicians?
Start a campaign to 'un-friend' them. Stop subscribing to their info/propaganda feeds.
Maybe their staff would start to notice when their Twit feed goes from, say, 1000 people down to 100 because of one single issue.
