I know it's kind of old now, but I picked up Episodes from Liberty City a few months back and have recently been playing it a lot more. I just beat The Ballad of Gay Tony a few days ago and started on The Lost and Damned last night. So far LaTD isn't as fun as BOGT, but I'm enjoying them both more than I did the main GTA 4 game. Seriously though, BoGT was fantastic and I really hope that we get more stuff with those characters in the future.
I know a lot of people say that GTA 4 was a step down from San Andreas b/c they took out a lot of the crazy fun stuff you could do (seriously, why no jet packs?) and while I do agree, I can get over that. What bothers me is the controls. Good lord, they can be horrid at times. On foot, my character seems to glitch out sometimes. Like, he'll randomly run in the opposite direction that I'm trying to go in, or he'll spaz out when I try to enter a vehicle. It's usually not an issue, but it's gotten me killed during fire fights before. The driving controls are worse though. The cars all feel way too heavy and they slide around way too much, it's almost like you're driving on ice. And god forbid if you run over a small curb while you're on a bike. I get that they were going for realism, but a lot of unrealistic stuff happens as a result. They seem to have gotten the driving controls right in LA Noire though, so hopefully that's what they go with for GTA V.
Anyway, GTA IV is still a fantastic game and the missions are very fun. I actually think the missions in this game are the most fun of any GTA game.

My main problem with the game was that, for all the advancement of the engine and graphics, the city still felt hollow spare a few places. It was worse there than something like Vice City cause the city was bigger, and you were driving more to go somewhere with something to do, missions excluded.

The city really was lacking in terms of fun things to do and there weren't a lot of buildings that you could go inside. Vice City had a whole freaking mall that you could run around in, including stores that you could enter. But really, that part didn't bother me too much when actually playing the missions. It's really just a problem when you're wanting to run around the city and mess around, which is admittedly what I usually spend the most time doing with a GTA game.

Love it. It's not perfect, but it is my favorite GTA game with only its expansions close. Though I did enjoy Vice City quite a bit - 3 and San Andreas, not really.

I loved Lost and Damned, but I was hoping that they would modify the cell phone cheats to include the L&D weapons.

Might be why I prefer 4 over the others - I'm only really interested in the missions.

I didn't like the main character. It was all a bit too serious for my liking. I would have liked a jet pack cheat option.

I've always been more of the "screwing around" school of playing.
Even back when I got Driver for the PC, my favorite part of that game was just fooling around in free mode, driving that car all over.

I definitely like it, but the game doesn't seem to reward you that much for screwing around. Plus, Niko is so sympathetic throughout, trying to be a good guy, but getting sucked into violence when he feels it's his only option. With Saints Row, you were there to cause trouble because it was fun and it was all a part of controlling the city.
In GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas, I felt like missions were something to do when everything else got boring, that kept me playing and playing and playing. GTA IV seems like you go from mission to mission to mission. I really doubt GTA 5 will fix this, but I'll be pre-ordering it as soon as I can just because I love the GTA series.

Speaking of Saints Row, I've only played the first one and it was great. I thought it was comparable if not better than San Andreas when it came out. How does the 2nd game compare to GTA IV? I know the 3rd game just looks fantastic, but I've been thinking about shelling out $20 to download the 2nd.

I only have Episodes and not the original GTA IV, I just played the hell out of it when my buddy loaned me his 360 a couple of years ago. I preferred the weapons cheats for Gay Tony. Oh yea, I really love the Road Rash style motorcycle racing in TLaD. Do you ever get to use weapons other than the bat? If only the driving controls weren't so wonky, the racing missions would be perfect.

My biggest problem I had with GRA IV was it felt like I couldn't drive 5 feet with out there being a cop. I loved the old ones being able to commit crimes and mess around. This one I had to practically walk everyone cuz the second I went to car jack someone there was always a cop car right behind them and those bastards wouldn't give up chasing me.

I haven't had much trouble with cops. They do seem to get alerted way too easy if you do violent stuff, but I hardly ever have them come after me for car jacking someone. And getting away from them seems easier than it was in the other games since you can just look at the map and see where to go. Though I do abuse the wanted level cheat because running from them isn't any fun. I also dislike how you never get tanks and shit coming after you, I used to love getting 6 stars in the PS2 games and seeing how long I could survive. Hell, I got 5 or 6 stars the other day and didn't even have helicopters trying to gun me down. I just stood on a small building and warded off the cops with the explosive shotgun.

but I'm lonely and you guys are my only friends. BTW, does anybody play online? My experience with free mode was frustrating as hell. I would always get merked badly by some dipshit in a Buzzard shooting rockets at me. I haven't tried any of the other modes yet, which one is the most fun? <-- the guy that asks way too many f***ing questions.

Love this game and its expansions. I like the GTA games more for their story and setting than the wackiness of the gameplay, although thats fun too. I can see why people didn't like GTA IV as much as San Andreas. I thought the Ballad of Gay Tony was a very good compromise though.

It's all about going crazy and doing whatever you want. SR2 forces you to create mayhem to unlock missions, and everything is done with humor. SR3 is awesome, albeit short and most of the missions are variations of side activities. But the humor and set pieces are second to none.

I liked it, it was groundbreaking as a city, but like all the other GTA games I never bothered finishing it after awhile. I think the ideal GTA game most folks are waiting for is one that expands upon the realism seen in GTA IV, while still maintaining that GTA sense of over-the-topness. I want to go to an amusement park and have the entire park to explore. Minigames up the ass, rides to go on, little things hidden here and there, a mission about a special stuffed plush that you have to find because it contains drugs or money - something nuts like that, and you'd spend time playing the minigames to get that bear. Why is it there? A corrupt carny? I have no idea.
Twisted Metal on PS3 showed an insane amount of destructibility in the environments. I'd love to see that in GTA games - where smaller houses receive damage if you ram into them, where big time missions in the game wind up having a part of the city blown up, with construction workers rebuilding it as the weeks go on - stuff to make you feel like you're in that city, and it's real and there are 'real' people doing stuff in it. Technology has kept them from achieving this, but the next gen GTA could realistically do it.

I've wasted hours just throwing him out of helicopters and jumping out of cars.
The hilarious physics of his movements made it fun to just kill him a bunvh.
