The chefs are going to do something REALLY special to Gordon Gekko's dinner next time he goes into that place! No kidding. Tipping may not be compulsory, but bad tippers are remembered...

I'm sure the service was bad. No one could be that much of an asshole. You'd be very surprised.

While the article may be a bit dramatic with the class warfare tag, it hardly gives anyone an excuse to act like a complete and utter dick like that. I don't know why everyone here is jumping to defend rich people.
No, every rich person isn't an asshole, but you have the guys like his, the foreclosure firm that threw a Halloween party where everyone dressed like a homeless person, etc. Rich people being assholes is hardly an isolated incident.

Dude's a tool.
Now to the real question: are we going to get a story the next time a middle school history teacher skimps on a tip, with such emphasis on his/her profession? Or is this just cynical pandering on the article writer's part?

What is a "real job"? Who decides what one is? This this this. I mean, maybe you can make that argument if the job in question is say pro gamer or something, but how is working in a restaurant any less "real" than a bank(especially when the banker is a patron of the restaurant). But then again I just went to a really fancy dinner with some rich guys (my friends' parents and their friends) on Saturday. They tipped pretty well(and are regulars, too), and we got amazing service. So there are guys on both ends of the spectrum.

I'm sure the service was bad. No one could be that much of an asshole. The guy that posted this was another banker who thought that the guy who did this was a complete tool for doing so. His comments suggested that he regularly does this when the waiter doesn't act like he/she is privileged to get the chance to wait on someone so special.

You know what? Everything would be much easier if Waiters were actually paid a flat wage instead of making a living from tips. As lionheart said, leaving a tip for a waiter in Australia is almost considered taking pity on the waiter since they receive a wage paid by the owner.

As lionheart said, leaving a tip for a waiter in Australia is almost considered taking pity on the waiter since they receive a wage paid by the owner. Meh. If the restaurant industry went to flat wages I'd be the first one jumping ship. The amount of money I make from tips/gifts from customers is the only thing that makes doing it worthwhile. I'd shoot myself if I had to deal with the inane assholes that eat out for $7-10 bucks an hour. Hell, I make more on my serving and bartending shifts than I do my management shift. I just can't get why we always have to jump into "this is how we do things here in Europe/Australia" crap. We get it. Things are done differently in America than they are in Great Britain, Germany or Australia. It's old at work (IN IRELAND, THEY DON'T ASK FOR YOUR NAME AT THE PUB! Oh f***ing well, we're not in Ireland and it's part of my job to play the "name game" with customers.) Sorry for that mini rant. I think between the customers who think they know how your business should be run and my fellow waitstaff/bartenders who don't get that tipping is a gift and not an absolute...I'm losing my goddamned mind.

, it's a free country and he can tip whatever he feels the service merits. Agreed. If the waiter cant accept this. He should go and get another job that is not based on tips.
