The chefs are going to do something REALLY special to Gordon Gekko's dinner next time he goes into that place! No kidding. Tipping may not be compulsory, but bad tippers are remembered... Sometimes I think servers should have to wear nametags to make poor servers easier to remember... But I don't eat out very often.

I never tip..Ever...My friends and women I have been with have gotten frustrated over this but if it is really going to bother you enough to mess with my food or to not fill my drink up then I will take my business elsewhere...Im already paying for the price of the food as it is and I dont have to eat there.
I also only order water with a lemon due to drinks typically being a seperate fee and I will order stuff and split with people if we know the portions are large.
maybe its just me being a cheap bastard

No offense meant my friend.

I have always hated the concept of tipping. But the last few years I also tip more than anyone I know, as in every time and as much as 50+%. And it all happened when this site had that huge pro/con tipping thread where I found out servers only get paid like 3 bucks an hour. Thanks for making me feel guilty FAN! Although I have to say it has never gotten me better service, even though I go out of my way to be reasonable.

The thing with tipping in the US is that the wait staff often makes below minimum wage. It's a ridiculous system, but why punish the people who need to work under it unless the service is truly terrible?
Also don't punish the wait staff if your food takes forever to come out. More often than not it means the kitchen's backed up and there isn't a single thing the waiter or waitress can do about it.
I usually tip around 15%. Eating out in New Jersey makes this exceptionally easy because sales tax is 7%. So I just double tax and round up to the nearest dollar (unless double tax is like, 2 cents above the nearest dollar, then I usually add a quarter or two). Sometimes it ends up being a lot more than just 15%, but at least if I unintentionally shortchange people it's never by very much.

Geeze, I dont wanna go here but if you NEVER tip then you are no better than the guy who we are discussing here. If you cant afford to tip then go to a place like McDonalds where you dont have to tip. I mentioned a while ago that I forgot to leave a tip once and the waitress called me on it and I was totally embarassed and I give her the money in total shame.

I had a server completely ignore my table for a full hour once. I would have left, but the person I went there with insisted on staying, and he wasn't going to go hunt down the server either. And the place wasn't nearly busy enough to warrant it (it wasn't really busy at all).

Yeah, a lot of servers are annoying about it. My facebook is filled with girls bitching about tips they got....that sound pretty good to me. It's more money than I make in my retail job. Try getting that tip with breats and see how you do.
Anyway.... I'm not saying don't tip, but some people expect too much. "I should get tipped enough to make $15 an hour! Humph! Boohoo." Tip what's approapriate.
This guy and people elsewhere are idiots thouhg.

I mentioned a while ago that I forgot to leave a tip once and the waitress called me on it and I was totally embarassed and I give her the money in total shame. You aren't required to tip at most restaurants. The guilt that comes with tipping is ridiculous. If you think the salary you are getting is unfair (which it is), why pass the guilt on to the consumer rather than the person who hired you? "A tipped employee engages in an occupation in which he or she customarily and regularly receives more than $30 per month in tips. An employer of a tipped employee is only required to pay $2.13 per hour in direct wages if that amount combined with the tips received at least equals the federal minimum wage. If the employee’s tips combined with the employer’s direct wages of at least $2.13 per hour do not equal the federal minimum hourly wage, the employer must make up the difference. Many states, however, require higher direct wage amounts for tipped employees." I eat out maybe three times a year, but the above quote is the reason I wouldn't feel guilty if I didn't leave a tip, for whatever reason. As long as the service isn't terrible, then I don't mind tipping. I just don't like the idea of putting guilt onto people who don't tip.

This whole "if you cant afford to tip, you cant afford to eat" mentality is obnoxious and annoying. It's not compulsory to tip, and it rests on my individual choice. I normally tip in American restaurants out of no compulsion but because I can. Don't tell me where I can and can't eat because you are getting shafted by your employer.
