Geeze, I dont wanna go here but if you NEVER tip then you are no better than the guy who we are discussing here. If you cant afford to tip then go to a place like McDonalds where you dont have to tip. I mentioned a while ago that I forgot to leave a tip once and the waitress called me on it and I was totally embarassed and I give her the money in total shame. They should never call you out, very unprofessional. I'd kick off if I was being bitched out by a waiter/waitress. What a horribly unprofessional thing to do.

When I travelled through America I did tip every time, but it should not be expected and if I received bad service I wouldn't have tipped, but I have to say that compared to Australia, service in America is so much better. We got chewed out by a waiter in Canada for leaving a 10% tip( that was all the cash we had on us), we felt pressured enough to end up paying with credit card to give him a tip... after it happened I was angry we backed down to him

Tipping is one of those fine-line points. Being the son of a waitress, my view is probably skewed, but so much of a waiter/waitress' earnings come from tipping that it is a douchey thing to not do so. If the service leaves something to be desired, a reduced or no tip is understandable. However if the waiter/waitress calls a customer out on not tipping, that is totally unprofessional so they are in the wrong as well.
Personally, unless something goes so horrible that it ruins my experience, I try to tip 15-20%, but like I said, that is on the basis of knowing how much of a percentage of wait staff's wages come from tips.

20%, unless they do something wrong. Even then I try not to lower it too much, since many places pool tips and split it with the bus boys, etc. Usually more than that around Christmastime.
My wife pretty much grew up on tips, since her mom did nails.

You aren't required to tip at most restaurants. The guilt that comes with tipping is ridiculous. If you think the salary you are getting is unfair (which it is), why pass the guilt on to the consumer rather than the person who hired you? "A tipped employee engages in an occupation in which he or she customarily and regularly receives more than $30 per month in tips. An employer of a tipped employee is only required to pay $2.13 per hour in direct wages if that amount combined with the tips received at least equals the federal minimum wage. If the employee’s tips combined with the employer’s direct wages of at least $2.13 per hour do not equal the federal minimum hourly wage, the employer must make up the difference. Many states, however, require higher direct wage amounts for tipped employees." I eat out maybe three times a year, but the above quote is the reason I wouldn't feel guilty if I didn't leave a tip, for whatever reason. As long as the service isn't terrible, then I don't mind tipping. I just don't like the idea of putting guilt onto people who don't tip. and to me thats basically what it boils down to...guilt...ridiculous to tell me that i cant enjoy a meal i want because i am not paying the peoples wages as well... So societal guilt is the reason you are going to shaft someone making less than minimum wage? Just admit you are cheap and stop moralizing, you can justify it all you want, but not tipping is a douche thing to do.

I'm not really bothered about the tip aspect to this story.
It's the "get a real job" element that I find detestable.

Im not their employer and I should not be held responsible. Call me cheap or whatever but its my money and I earned it. If I want to spend it on a sit down meal than I have every right too. Its not a requirement remember? Im not required to tip and im not going to be guilted into it because of people like you.

My wife pretty much grew up on tips, since her mom did nails. Same here. I always tip, and I almost always tip generously. The way I see it, the difference between a regular tip and a generous one is often just a few bucks, so why not chip in a little extra to spread some good cheer?

You are just coming across as if your trying to offend me now or shame me...You know nothing about me...I donate to multiple charities...Hell if I did as little as possible my name on here wouldnt be the color it is. Also im participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5K charity run in Indy as well in April. Just because I do not feel that it is my responsbility to pay peoples wages after paying for my food as well gives you the right to be so damn smug? Their employers should be taking care of the necessary requirements that their employees deserve not the customers and to be told I shouldnt be able to eat somewhere or should have to just stick to fast food is even more ridiculous.
