So what does the second W stand for then? Technically nothing. They're just WWE now, sort of like how KFC dropped "Kentucky Fried Chicken" years ago. Well, sort of. The company does business as WWE, but its legal name is still World Wrestling Entertainment. When they file a trademark application, for example, the applicant's name is listed as "World Wrestling Entertainment." I watched Capitol Punishment on WWE Classics and the full name was on the commentators' table. But anyway, this is great news. This is how I imagine the settlement talks went: Vince McMahon: You were right, I was wrong. You're smart, I'm dumb. You're the best, I'm the worst. *pause* Ummm, you're good-looking, I'm ... not attractive? Fund member: All right, as long as you're willing to admit that.

They changed it in the second half of last year, not long after the Punk story line if I remember right.

Now they need to workout a deal for the words "Superstars of Wrestling", that is just as stupid editing out "of wrestling" when they mention the old tv show. And get over the whole Chris Beniot thing. He excisted. The double murder of an innocent woman & child is something that a lot of people just don't "get over."

The only problem I have with it is that Vince himself stated in a WWE Magazine interview that they shouldn't glorify him but they also shouldn't try to pretend he didn't exist in historical contexts, yet Classics On Demand attempts to do just that. Right now, there's an episode of WCW Worldwide from May 1993 on COD that's awkwardly edited to remove a match where he teamed with Bobby Eaton. That's the kind of thing even Vince was saying shouldn't be done.

On top of removing the match, there's a segment on the same episode where Bischoff hypes Slamboree '93 and lists the matches. The mention of Benoit/Eaton vs. Scorpio/Bagwell has been removed, plus they removed Schiavone and Ventura mentioning it while talking about Slamboree during a Hollywood Blondes squash match. If anything, COD seems to be getting more strict about removing him as time passes.

They can't afford for anybody to get the wrong idea and think they're glorifying a monster, which is exactly what would happen. That would cause backlash that the WWE really can't afford. They have to keep "erasing" him from history for the foreseeable future.

My point was Vince McMahon himself stated in WWE's own magazine that they shouldn't be trying to erase him from history. If he feels it is necessary to erase Benoit from history like Classics On Demand tries to do, he should have defended the policy instead of acting like he disagrees with his own edict.

They should leave Benoit in all DVD's. He wasn't a murderer at the time of those events. The historical context should be enough. If WWE ever address Benoit directly in a retrospective profile, even a brief one on their website, it should be along the lines of "A career and life that ended in tragedy etc..." with a matter-of-fact description/chronology of what he did as a wrestler, ending in a epilogue describing the circumstances of how his life ended, along with those of his family.
It's better for WWE to use Benoit as a cautionary tale including the horrific end, than to try and erase him from history.

They do leave him in WWE Home Video releases. His SummerSlam matches weren't removed from the SSlam Anthology box set, and they included the 2005 Elimination Chamber match in the DVD of EC matches even though he was in it. It's Classics On Demand that completely removes him from old PPVs and episodes of old WWE, WCW, ECW, and Stampede TV shows.

The content on COD is ever changing, and depends on subscribers. WWE may fear a backlash from people with Benoit on COD, and try to say they are profiting off of him. I mean it sounds stupid, but WWE gets nitpicked all the time over more petty things than this. It's a no win situation either way.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but as someone who's avoided watching anything related to Benoit, I'd feel really uncomfortable watching his work. For me at least, it's not like a wrestler dying due to heart problems or drug use, this guy killed his wife and child. It's completely fine if others still like his matches, but I'm personally done with that.

Getting back to the topic at hand, I approve of this settlement immensely. As someone who grew up with the initials "WWF", it always saddened me a little to see it hacked out of DVD releases and the like. I'm ready and willing to buy any re-releases they put out with the unedited footage.

Well I guess it's good then that I waited to buy those WWE DVD's/am lazy, especially if they do re-release stuff so the scratch logo is visible again.

This shoudln't have been an issue in the first place, but glad they took care of it. All Vince had to do was give them a nice paycheck and they could have kept their name.
