For once a major studio is actually doing the movie goer a great service by trying to put a end to these shitty pointless films.

Does that mean any studio can sue porn companies for their porn parodies? Are the makers of 'The Assengers' currently nervous at the moment? Actually, the makers of a 3 Stooges Porn parody are currently facing a lawsuit from the people who own the 3 Stooges trademarks. www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq/three-stooges-porn-parody-314151

All I've taken from this thread is that I might have to watch that Avengers parody. For research, of course.

I read that Asylum have made a profit on every single film they've made. I have to applaud them for making money on a regular basis even if creatively they're unashamedly rip-off merchants.

I told them that their version should be titled "Battling Ships" but they just wouldn't listen to me...

Compare box arts, if I was a kid I would definitely pick up American Battleship over Battleship at the video store.

Why are so many of you glad they are getting sued?
Wait, you're the people that get confused at the video stores as to which one is the real thing, aren't you?
This is just Universal hoping to scare The Asylum with its legal team's presumably huge budget and nothing more. Asylum probably can't absorb a lawsuit as easily as Universal can.
This is presumably a trademark claim, as Asylum's movies come nowhere close to copyright infringement. I suppose Universal might be able to make a claim, since American Battleship is probably the closes they've come to actually making a confusing title. Nobody is going to mistake Transmorphers, and Sherlock Holmes is public domain, but American Battleship....maybe.
A quote from the Asylum on it
"“The Global Asylum has promoted the feature film American Battleship for nearly a year while Universal raised no concerns,” said Global Asylum today. “The timing of Universal’s recently filed lawsuit coincides with mixed reviews of its big-budget film, Battleship — the first movie based on a board game since Clue. Looking for a scapegoat, or more publicity, for its pending box-office disaster, the executives at Universal filed this lawsuit in fear of a repeat of the box office flop, John Carter of Mars. The Universal action is wholly without merit and we will vigorously defend their claims in Court. Nonetheless, we appreciate the publicity.”"

Idk, you gotta admit it's REALLY smart strategy. Instant fame because you're releasing a cheaper version of basically the same movie.

No, Yakman, I don't like seeing original well done indie films being ignored because of these unoriginal talentless f***s. I'm sure both films suck, but at least I KNOW if it's an asylum film it will. No talent in piggybacking.

You really think that is an audience that crosses over?

Does that mean any studio can sue porn companies for their porn parodies? Are the makers of 'The Assengers' currently nervous at the moment? No. They are considered parodies and are safe from lawsuits. Asylum has never claimed their films to be parodies. I bet they will now to get out of trouble. But, from my understanding, a parody has to make fun of the original source material for it to count under the legal definition. And as stated by a few I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner...
