Well, he cut it in tweener tone and seemed to be going off the cuff, so it's not surprising. It's alot better than Pandering Babyface Promo #574. That's what people want to see. If Cena did it too, it'd work.

Punk was acting like a spoiled brat tonight. He comes across as that kid in class who just have to find fault for everything a teacher does just to get attention. It really makes no sense. The guy ran Vince out of his job - not entirely on purpose but definitely what he was hoping for, then he put the idea in everyone's minds that led to Triple H being cut and transparently hid behind suddenly wanting him to stay when he saw someone he liked less was taking over, and now he's trying to chase out Laurinaitis. Why is he supposed to be the good guy? Because he's being portrayed as the anti-hero 90's style face? Got the crowd in his corner with that, so it must work. For some reason they forgot that for a few months, still had him be a dick, but cut pandering promos. Then they remembered out of the blue.

And if Punk came out and was a smiley nice guy, it'd ruin his entire character. There's a reason people turned on Cena, and why the Rock talks about how "real men" (as stupid of a way to put it as that is) see through Cena's "Phony BS". Cena's character has no balls, and that's actually what HIS storyline is taking care of right now. In the meantime, they've given the fans a superface with an edge (and not a cliche "badass" edge, like Orton/Batista), which is what they've wanted for YEARS. WWE writing is firing on all cylinders right now. Except Punk doesn't come off as a badass, he just comes off as a jackass, and the only edge he has is that he acts like Dr. House at his worst. No one's asking Punker to become a white meat babyface, but showing some restraint, even tact, goes a long way. But he doesn't do that, he just goes on about how great he is, belittles anyone who isn't pro-Punk, then makes his opponent look like a total goober. Come to think of it, he almost reminds me of post-Reign face Triple H. Like I said, Attitude era face. Two of the three most popular faces they've ever had acted exactly like that. And Cena did too before they cut the cord.

I was expecting him to hit an Ace Crusher on Foley after Punk left. Me too. I was really hoping for that instead of the mic shot. Next week he could snap again and go on and on about how he invented the move, etc. And eventually go further into madness and just run around the ring yelling "Ace Crusha! Ace Crusha! Ace Crusha!" JR style whilst pantomiming the maneuver. I want the one giving Ace all his power to be Linda. Raw ending with Johnny Ace and Linda making out in the middle of the ring...jesus. Both of them talking in their robot voices about how hot they get for each other. Linda gets wet for the first time in 30 years thanks to Big Johnny, etc etc.

Cena doing that would be awesome.

Cena doing that would be awesome. People are basically waiting for it. It's probably why it will be very hard to turn him heel. If he smashed Swagger in the head and then gave a worked shoot promo on the way out, he probably would have gotten a standing O. Sure, the kids wouldn't get it, but the kids love Randy Orton and he was basically doing a serial killer gimmick up until he went to Smackdown.

It kind of sounded like more than ever, Punk was trying to make himself sound like Austin. Not just with word choice (the repeated use of "pathetic" for one), but that he was starting to try to affect Austin's voice towards the end of it.
To be fair though, quite a few people want him to be "The Next Austin", so he may as well start taking promo cues from him.

His first promo of the night (In the segment with Mick, Dolph and Vickie) was boring and a bog-standard baby face promo. The final promo with Laurinitis though was great. CM Punk is much better when he's in asshole tweener mode rather than been a straight up (gangster trippin!) babyface.
It was an awesome promo. When he cuts shoot-style interviews like that, Punk's delivery is terrific. He makes it sounds so real, like he's legitimately pissed off and legitimately believes every single word that he's saying.

Has there ever been a more unlikeable face than CM Punk is right now?? I mean the guy almost turned Johnny Ace face to me!!
And by the way, his promo was very similar to the Ziggler one at the begining of the show.

I loved it but i've honestly thought that most punk promos have been good. hes got one of the coolest characters in history Before he pulled last night's Austin Act, he still came off as HHH Mk. II to me. The guy who "lives and breathes 'the business'", the guy who thrives on burying people (though HHH did it in the ring AND on the mic, and Punk only does it on the mic so far). The main difference is that while Hunter slept with the Boss's daughter, Punk took the Batista route and slept with everyone EXCEPT the boss's daughter. I get the feeling that he made a conscious shift to promo more like Austin because even he was becoming aware of how similar to HHH he was.

Punk only doesn't seem like a good babyface because he hasn't had a good heel to feud with yet.
Cena and HHH were faces, Del Rio is boring and Ace doesn't really do anything evil (and if he does he does it in an incredibly subtle way).
As much as it pains me to say it, they probably should have kept Mr. McMahon on tv and have him feud with Punk. It's unoriginal but at least Punk would have a REAL villian to play off of.
Punk just needs someone to do something so despiciable to him that even the "he's acting like a smug prick" crowd can be won over to his side.

Has there ever been a more unlikeable face than CM Punk is right now?? I mean the guy almost turned Johnny Ace face to me!! Punk's end promo did two things to me: 1) Make me feel sorry and bad for Johnny Ace - his mentions of hating being bullied and pushed around when he tries to do a good job honestly made me feel like everyone has been treating him like crap, he may seem a dumbass or a bit incapable, but he's just one of those guys who hears all the cruel crap said about him who tries to let it slide off his back peacefully but can't manage it. 2) Made me think "Yes, this is the Punk character I want to hear from," as he is an arse, but he's meant to be that tool who says straight up things without pandering to the audience too much. I may not agree with his assessment of Ace being a crap in ring worker (on the contrary actually!) but Punk's frustration/paranoia/anger in his promo gave him an aura of bad-ass cool which he's lacked lately. I've moaned about Punk being a bit of a moron in the past few weeks with no redeeming factors in his promos but tonight he got a bit of cool back. So I like what both guys did, shades of grey ahoy.

And by the way, his promo was very similar to the Ziggler one at the begining of the show. Going back to Boston all that time ago before Money in the Bank, he told everyone that he doesn't wear a white hat and that he is not a nice guy. Punk is supposed to be a prick, and the crowd will love him for it. It's just that Ace is supposed to be a bigger stooge here. He let Zack Ryder compete without clearance and lose the US title when the Daniel Bryan/Mark Henry ordeal proved that he should have remained champion, he is extremely transparent in his intentions to screw Punk at the Rumble, his first act as GM was to fire Jim Ross in OKC, and is basically the real life Bill Lumbergh. He deserves what Punk gives him.

First, you'll have to find someone with enough 'legitimacy' to survive when of Punk's burial jobs on the mic. (Jericho) Next. you have to find someone good enough on the mic to give it right back to him. (Jericho) Then, you'll have to find someone who can go in the ring well enough to hold up his end of a match in a blood feud. (Jericho)

Ace has already screwed Punk over before, he's admitted he's intending to do it again. He's literally nothing but a brown nosing corporate stooge, in what nightmare bizarro world is he anyone at all to be sympathetic towards? He's even worse than 90s McMahon, since Ace is all the bad stuff of Mr. McMahon, plus McMahon at least admitted he was an evil jerk.

Ace is a harried middle manager just trying to do his job and move up the corporate ladder. Vince was a gleefully cackling cartoon villain.
