No offense at all to Mick Foley, but I liked it until he started talking.

CM Punk IS an asshole, that's what his character is supposed to be. Some of the most popular wrestlers and movie heroes of all time are assholes, too. It may speak something of the human race, but that's the kind of character adult males want to cheer for, because it's who many of us want to be. Hell, it's who I AM in real life. Adult males cheer for an asshole because they want to be an asshole? If that's how you want to frame it... Though I think Punk has some redeeming qualities. I didn't think him being a jerk was the entirety of his character, but hey maybe I'm wrong...

MANY people want to be able to treat others like shit, and talk down to everybody, and still get everything they want and have people think they're "awesomely snarky". It's like getting the best of everything. You get to have people worship you, and you still get to hold them at arms' length and look down on them. Yeah, a lot of people love that idea. You'd think I was one of them, but I'm not.

I'd like to hear Punk cut a great promo that isn't a "shoot". Seriously, all his "epic" promos since the MiTB build have been built around insider references. Either that, or they just flat-out bury Alberto del Rio.

Punk is solid gold on the mic, and this was his best work since the "pipe bomb" promo.
I don't see how anyone thinks Johnny Ace looks sympathetic.
Sometimes you just have to read between the lines a little bit. He's an evil mastermind (the mystery texts, phone convo's, trying to play off as a good guy when he's anything but).

I seriously wonder how many people would have found Austin to be an unlikable babyface back in the golden age of the attitude era. The thing is, Austin was a legitimate badass who even though ripped their opponent with words, never seemed like a whining bitch and did tons of stunners because, well, f*** them, stunner to everybody Punk reminds me more all this guys who keep reminding everyone how their tastes/music/ their childhood was better but that overall isn't that badass Plus, PUNK at times really buries their opponent, some of the dialogues from him are HHH worthy of berries This times a million. I honestly think Punk is the most unsympathetic babyface in wrestling right now. He's a dick to EVERYONE yet claims to be a man of the people and I'm supposed to cheer for him? f*** that. Also, I try to not use this word but he really does bury most of the people he faces with his dialogues.

I don't see how anyone thinks Johnny Ace looks sympathetic. The fake-out punch by Punk and Ace's reaction was a classic bully tactic. Just sayin'.

I groaned. I was hoping we were past the "OMG worked shoot" shock value nonsense with Punk, but considering how successful he's been as a conventional top babyface (which is to say, middling at best), I suppose they've decided to try what worked the first time around.
When you start having people talk onscreen about how a wrestler was unsuccessful because he was uncharismatic and boring, pretty much the only people who are going to give a damn are those nerds on the internet who hang around message boards talking about which wrestlers are uncharismatic and boring. And hey, I'm one of them too. But for everyone else, for the people who actually want to immerse themselves in the product and be entertained for reasons other than the backstage gossip, for the people who aren't salivating at the prospect of WWE becoming more like Ring of Honor because they've never even heard of Ring of Honor because the very concept of pro wrestling focusing on rather staid nonentities who know lots of holds instead of on characters and storylines sounds completely unappealing, I can't see "shoots" like this doing anything but taking them out of the action and telling them to change the channel if they want to watch some form of entertainment that doesn't need to break the fourth wall to be entertaining.

I have a feeling if he was going toe-to-toe with someone like Edge, or Jericho, or JBL, and he didn't have shooting to fall back on, he probably wouldn't look nearly as good.

I don't think Punk buries people exactly, but his tendency to do the whole, "Wink wink, this has something to do with off-camera stuff," shtick is irritating. Not as bad as the Triple H feud where he wouldn't shut up about it but still.
Actually, think part of my dislike for his character is residue from that feud. Nothing short of Trips bashing in brains in with a sledgehammer then eating them would've made up for what an insufferable prick Punk was at that point in time.

OK, I just saw this thing, and it really, really made me want to see Ace kick Punk's ass. I assume that's not the intended reaction.

The problem isn't so much Punk being unlikable as it is his enemy not being vile enough. What's really making him come off as a bully is the delayed timing of Laurinaitis finally snapping and being more open with his targeting of Punk. Ace playing a clueless dork is entertaining, and different from the norm of the usual GM character, but it doesn't make for a truly hateable antagonist. The fury of Punk's attacks would come off as a lot more understandable if Ace were more explicit about wanting to maintain the status quo. That's been my entire deal on this. Laryngitis is too subtle for someone as in-your-face as Punk. Punk being justified for his hatred feels a little too arguable for this feud. This feud needed a person who can not only be an unlikable sneering bastard, but a man who HAS EVERYTHING not because he worked for it, but said person using his vast power to screw with Punk would've meant more... WE NEEDED: {Spoiler}

If you did,I would hope youd have a little more sense than to say that.

this was way better than anything he's done since the mitb period. No fancy insider remarks, just straight to the point.

I loved ECW and the attitude era when promos like this weren't out of the ordinary, so yes, I very much I enjoyed Punk's promo. I totally bought that he was completely pissed off and I wanted him to kick Ace's ass for screwing all the faces since he showed up. I didn't think it was "smarky" or whatever "IWC" nonsense word you want to throw in there just because he brought up the fact that Johnny Ace used to be a wrestler. I'm gonna guess that a lot of people watching wrestling already know that, and it's not that hard of a concept to grasp if you're only someone who watches occasionally.

Men (or certain men; I'm not one of them) look at CM Punk, an asshole who has throngs of fans cheering his name and women lined up to get with him, in spite of or as a result of him being a complete dick, and they think to themselves, "man, I wanna be that guy;" a man who does what he wants, says what he wants, and not only are there no consequences, but people love him for it. At least, that's my theory.

I would much rather CM Punk bury Johnny Ace than Triple H bury CM Punk. I think even Trips realizes that he just can't let himself get involved, or he will bury again. It's just in his blood, in his brain matter, in his soul.
