According to NeoGAF member gofreak, the patent application was filed on 9 December 2012 by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan, and will work by linking individual game discs to a user's account without requiring a network connection meaning any future attempt to use this disc on another user's console won't work.
The patent explains that games will come with contactless tags that will be read by your console in much the same way as modern bank cards. When a disc is first used, the disc ID and player ID will be stored on the tag. Every time the disc is used in future, the tag will check if the two ID’s match up and, if not, then the disc won’t work.
The document goes on to explain that such a device is part of Sony's ongoing efforts to deter second-hand games sales, and is a far simpler solution than always-on DRM or passwords.
It's worth noting that Sony has not confirmed the existence of the device, and the patent doesn't state what machine it will be used in, with later paragraphs also mentioning accessories and peripherals.
It does raise some concerns though. Firstly, the impact on game rental stores would be catastrophic as surely this means they'd no longer be able to do business? Given publishers' usual desire to keep retailers sweet by not undercutting them on prices and the like, this would be an unusual move.
There's also the issue of what happens should your console break and need replacing, or if you have more than one console. Will the games be linked to your PSN account, meaning they can still be used, or the console, meaning an entire new library of titles would need to be purchased?
IGN reached out to Sony for comment but was told the company doesn't comment on rumour and speculation.
Of course this won't affect what's already out there, and it may be too late, but it is interesting

I predict it'll take years to work this out to a usable product, if it ever gets completely hashed out. There is just so much that won't fly with the general public without creative solutions.

Then do it. Introduce something that would cut out the second-hand industry and watch how few people will play your games.
And while you're at it, lower prices for games so that second hand games aren't the only option.

We've already been talking about this in the PlayStation thread. We've come to a general consensus that it would be incredibly stupid for Sony to actually implement this. Remember folks just cause they patent it doesn't mean they intend to use it.

Yeah... Sony, and other companies patent things all the time simply to own the tech. This is a non story, they already stated they aren't gonna lock out used games.
Nothing to see here... Move along.

It's kind of sad that you could've written the headline without saying which company it was and I would've correctly guessed 'Sony'.
I don't know why Sony seems to want such complete totalitarian control of this sort of thing, but it really mostly seems to just be because they can.

I understand when companies want to come down hard on piracy, they lose millions upon millions and piracy is illegal. Wanting to stop folks from being able to play used games is another matter, and just ridiculous.

This thing comes up like every few months for the next Sony or Microsoft console. They won't do it because everyone reacts violently against it. I don't know if they just float this crap out to see if everyone doesn't react badly.

I would not be surprised if it was correct that they want the patent because they found a way to do it, not because they will do it.

Yeah. I want to say that it was Microsoft that patented a device that would allow them to spy on users through their kinect. Nothing will come of it, but they own the patent now, which is gold in the tech world.

I hate this idea. If Sony do this for the PlayStation 4, I won't buy one.
