I like Bret's work... but he is SUCH a mark for himself.

Given the period around 99/00/01 for Bret's life I can actually imagine him not having seen Triple H's amazing run. I mean if you removed those years (just empathise) would you regard Triple H as a great? A good possibly (as Bret said) but not a great.
That being said Wrestle Talk TV is FSM led, so it's pretty much just under Powerslam for smarkish sucking up to whoever's being interviewed. I was hoping the interviewer would mention the turn of the millennium bouts Triple H was involved in (vs Cactus Jack two PPVs in a row, vs Austin at No Way Out 2001 as three obvious examples) to clear that up.

I love Bret to death, but why is he clinging to the old "more moves=better wrestler" cliche?
If anything, HHH is a bit underrated in the ring. He's a brawler for sure, but he's one that knows how to make those brawls seem like the most epic thing ever. He's not just walking around the ring punching and sledgehammering, he makes sure just about every major sequence has a point to it.
The Cactus Jack matches were a prime example, they were almost like action movie fights. That's not easy to pull off live, and I think Hunter deserves a lot more credit for that.

Trips' douchiness during the screwjob may be clouding Bret's judgement a bit, but the guy does have a bit of a point. I don't think HHH is one of the "all time greats," as many have praised him, but Bret's wrong in saying he hasn't had great matches.
Also, I initially noticed this during the Bret/Shawn rivalry interviews, but Bret really needs to clear his throat. :S

I can't really disagree with him. As Jim Cornette said, Hunter is not the guy you pay to see but the guy who is fighting the guy you pay to see.
And Bret's comments are generous compared to the comment HHH made about the entire roster during the walkout.

Triple H's matches as Hunter Hearst Helmsley were more technical, hardly just punches, you could see shades of Ric Flair in the way he sold and worked his matches and bits and pieces of other athletic wrestlers at the time. The Attitude Era came along and Stone Cold, The Rock, Triple H, etc shifted to the brawling style to fit the tone of the product at the time.

Isn't Bret not liking HHH already a well known thing? I wouldn't even say this is a case of not liking. He says he was always good, but not quite great. The use of the word "buries" in the thread title is fairly misleading in that regard.

I agree to some extent. I like Triple H, and I somewhat supported the reign of terror. But I wouldn't put him on the same level as a lot of other guys.
Not because he's not an original, but because he's too safe. He never takes a chance. I can never remember a time when he had an innovative match. Bret is correct in saying he knows exactly what to expect out of Triple H, and I think we all do, I mean here's a guy who never steps out of the kind of matches he's had for the last decade. In a lot of ways, it feels like he almost phones it in.
I think a lot of it has to do with injuries, but let's be honest...if you can't perform on a high level, especially for the majority of the past 14 years, then you shouldn't be in the spot that you're in. But pre-main event Triple H? Dude could move with the best of them. As I said before, I think he sacrificed his quality for his look, and it's a damn shame in that regard.
Triple H has had good matches, but most of those matches aren't good because of what Triple H is doing. Hell, I'll go so far as to say, when Triple H isn't going out there for himself (meaning he's actually going to put someone over), then he can at least make the other guy look really good. But when he wins? Look at Wrestlemania 25...it just didn't work for me. When he puts himself out there more for his opponent, it works. I don't know how to explain it any further.

I don't see a need for Bret to make those comments. WWE gives him a good income so is there any need to belittle the career of one of the leaders of the company that pays you, even if he really does believe what he's saying?
I could imagine Taker isn't too happy about Bret saying last years Mania match was basically 2 guys walking after each other slowly and then pounding each other.
Not every march has to be Flair V Steamboat.

The product of years of work in the main event going over guys.
HHH's case was a very unique one as he was built to who he was by being around foreverrr and always being involved with major, major league players even if he wasn't putting on the showstopping matches (HBK in DX, Stephanie in McMahon-Helmsley, etc). I'm a huge Bret fan and I don't have audio in the office and couldn't hear but it sounds like he's not saying anything that isn't true, but at the same time he might not be respecting that his position in the company and build essentially "brute forced" him into the position of legend/special attraction.

I still think HHH circa 2000-2001 might have been the #1 guy in North American wrestling. I don't know if I'd consider him an "all-time great", but I do think he was the top guy at that period in time.
