Not every march has to be Flair V Steamboat. Oh I agree, and I don't think that's the case that he (or even I) wanted to make. It's just dawned on me when I watch Triple H anymore, it just seems like he goes out there and does only enough to get by, which is fine 95% of the time. It's the other 5% when there IS a big match and you should go out there and try a little harder. I think I've maybe seen 3 or 4 matches since 2002 where he goes out there actually does that and even that is debatable. I think the last time for me was when he put Batista over for the World title, he gave a little bit extra. But I would still say that he was on cruise control in some ways. Outside of who he is, there's just never a big match feel to him. That's great if it was the 80's, but nowadays it doesn't work.

He didn't really bury Hunter at all. He just said what everyone else has said about him for quite sometime. Bret, to his credit, didn't come off as marking about himself and even complimented Hunter.
But for the WWE or even Hunter to put himself up there with say Hogan, Austin, Rock, Foley, Shawn, Flair, and Taker? Yes, that is quite the laugh riot and that's all Bret was saying.

I agree to some extent. I like Triple H, and I somewhat supported the reign of terror. But I wouldn't put him on the same level as a lot of other guys. Not because he's not an original, but because he's too safe. He never takes a chance. I can never remember a time when he had an innovative match. Bret is correct in saying he knows exactly what to expect out of Triple H, and I think we all do, I mean here's a guy who never steps out of the kind of matches he's had for the last decade. In a lot of ways, it feels like he almost phones it in. I think a lot of it has to do with injuries, but let's be honest...if you can't perform on a high level, especially for the majority of the past 14 years, then you shouldn't be in the spot that you're in. But pre-main event Triple H? Dude could move with the best of them. As I said before, I think he sacrificed his quality for his look, and it's a damn shame in that regard. Triple H has had good matches, but most of those matches aren't good because of what Triple H is doing. Hell, I'll go so far as to say, when Triple H isn't going out there for himself (meaning he's actually going to put someone over), then he can at least make the other guy look really good. But when he wins? Look at Wrestlemania 25...it just didn't work for me. When he puts himself out there more for his opponent, it works. I don't know how to explain it any further. He plays it safe because he's torn both of his quads. Austin did the same after breaking his neck. It's smart, especially if you can rely on storytelling to put on a good match. Before the first quad tear he was willingly taking bumps into thumbtacks/on top of a cell so he didn't always phone it in. I'm not even remotely a HHH fan, but I do think his ring work is underrated at times.

As far as the millions of title reigns that Bret thinks HHH has had, he's had 8 (I don't count the Briefcase Championship) compared to Bret's 5
Not that much of a difference.

Let's be honest here, Triple H may not be in the Hogan/Flair/Austin/Rock league, but neither are Shawn and Undertaker. People think of Michaels and Taker that way now because WWE has conditioned them to, but really they're just two vets that WWE was determined to put over as huge because they were the two biggest veterans they had left on the roster.

Bret said that HHH didn't innovate any new moves. What did Bret innovate? Wasn't the Sharpshooter. Rugged Ronnie Garvin was doing that in the WWF years earlier.

.....Nattie's going to start farting again. Thanks Bret. This....also, Tyson Kidd's non-kayfabe reason for injury upon return will be an uncontrollable case of diarrhea. Thanks Bret. Like Nattie gushing like a schoolgirl over the second coming of Giant Gonzales was such a great use of her skills and talents.

Hardly buried him. Set it all up with complimenting him. He is so much of a mark for himself. Maybe the stroke erased some memory. Him saying he could predict a match (against Undertaker) is not so unique. All matches have an aura of predictability. I guess I could have predicted Brett would get smacked, "Hulk" up and then win with a sharpshooter. It's what the fans pay to see and is the individual's signature move. Brett loves him some Brett

Exactly my thoughts, Setian. The only thing I would add is unlike the legends you stated Triple H's importance is still being and will be felt because of his ties to the McMahon family. That's where I think a majority of Triple H's legacy good and bad will be.

I consider Triple H in 2000/2001 alone to have had more great matches than Bret Hart ever did.
I always found Bret Hart boring though and could never get into his stuff outside of his breef heel run. I'd take Rock/HHH iron man over Bret/Shawn any day and I'm being deadly serious.

Pretty sure that Bret considers himself to be in league with those guys and that is comical in itself. Bret was good, but in no way is he on the level of Hogan, Austin, or Rock. Bret is right there with HHH, HBK, Foley, and Taker in the second tier of guys that are great but don't transcend wrestling. I can't really disagree with him. As Jim Cornette said, Hunter is not the guy you pay to see but the guy who is fighting the guy you pay to see. I disagree with this as HHH is a good heel who a lot of people want to see humbled. I feel that he has taken the real life vitriol directed at him based on the circumstances of his marriage and perceived politics and used it to further his heel persona, so indirectly a lot of people do pay to see him (lose).

I disagree with a lot of that. Triple H didn't really innovate but that doesn't mean he isn't a great wrestler. His work from 99-01 was fantastic and I loved everything he did before that starting with the blue blood gimmick.

I think the only stuff Triple H really deserves to come under fire for, in terms of lack of innovation, would be his copycat Ric Flair 2003 gimmick.

I can probably think of more Triple H matches that I love than Bret Hart ones, honestly. Not to say Trips is as good as he is, though in some respects you might be able to argue it, but the guy has a huge library of amazing matches.
