It was quiet that night in the city of Omashu. Not a single citizen seemed out of place, all no doubt retired for the night or about to. There was an almost unsettling feeling that hung over the air, the kind of feeling where deep down you knew that something was about to happen.
The lights in the city has all been extinguished save those inside the Omashu castle it self. Instead those shone bright as ever, almost as if the person inside had no intention of ever going to bed. Inside the castle an old man was seated in his throne, clad in royal green robes. A large gold goblet was held in his hand which he sipped from, the wild, white-haired man looking quite relaxed.
Off to the side was a large white and black beast, a pair of horns protruding from its head. From first glance it appeared to be a cross between a goat and a gorilla, an odd combination that was not unusual at all for this world. The old man stroked over the creature with his free hand as he continued to sip, letting forth a yawn.
"I say, Flopsie, tonight sure has been dull! I hate nights like this. Everything's always so serene and tranquil, it really gets on my nerves! It's been quieter tonight then it's been for the past few decades in my bedroom!" the old man cackled as he lounged back in his seat. "I guess that's the life of a King for ya. Personally I'd fine just giving it up at this point. But then again... I don't know who'd replace me so I guess I just have to keep at it."
He gazed up towards the ceiling of the lavish throne room, seeming to lose himself in thought. "At least I'll be able to see my old friend, Aang, tomorrow. I tell you, it's been ages since we last spoke! Ever since he left to clean up the Four Kingdoms and all that I've been missing him alot to be honest. I understand that he has his duties and so do I, but I gotta admit I wish it was like it was back in the day. Where the two of us could just hang out together and cause all sorts of mischief!" The man cackled to himself once more, taking another drink from his beverage.
He sit in silence for a few moments more, perhaps reflecting on things when suddenly there was a loud quake from just outside the throne room! Immediately the King sat straight up in his seat, his loyal pet standing to attention as well. "Hmmmm... now that's more like it!" he declared, jumping out of his seat.
No sooner than he had the throne room doors swung open, a pair of guards stumbling through. "King Bumi sir. There's trouble at the front gates! We're under attack!" one cried. "They showed up out of nowhere! We never even saw them coming!"
"Now, now, calm down, youngster. Exactly who are we dealing with here? Did you get a good look at them?"
"Well... that's the funny thing about it sir." The soldier scratched at the back of his head. "They're... Earthbenders." he declared. The King's eyes grew wider than usual at this. "Eh, that doesn't make sense. Why would Earthbenders be attacking one of their own? Especially one of the strongest out there?" Bumi simply shook his head. "Honestly, kids these days have no respect for their elders. Then again I guess I didn't back in the day either."
"What should we do sir? Shall we distract them while you escape?" One soldier suggested. But Bumi simply laughed at this. "Are you kidding? I've been waiting for something like this to happen all night! And they came all this way so we may as well make it worth their while!" The wily old man grinned as he removed his royal robes, revealing beneath a surprisingly athletic build beneath those billowing robes of his. "Come, let's give them a warm welcome, men!"
Meanwhile in the halls of the castle a battle was erupting, chunks of rock flying back and forth as Earthbenders battled one another in all out war. Unfortunately it appeared the invaders had the upper hand at the moment, one of the royal guards quickly laid out via a large boulder to the face, taking him down with ease! Another feel soon after, the ground rumbling beneath his feet before smashing him against the ceiling!
"Keep on the attack, men! Do not stop until we've found him!" One of the soldiers declared to the others as they pressed the attack.
"Don't let up! Push them back and out of Omashu!" One of the survivors on the other side shouted.
All of a sudden the ground began to shake, the floor beneath the invading benders suddenly splitting into! A few men fell through the opening cracks, screaming out as they fell. Others managed to leapt out of the way at the last second, turning their attentions towards the enemy. Standing now between the Omashu guard was... King Bumi, of course, a smirk on his face.
"Now, now, what's wrong kiddies? You didn't think I'd just sit back and let you wreck my house, did ya? What kind of man do you take me for?" He took a step forward, ripping a chunk of rock from the wall nearby and forming it into a massive stone, tossing it right into the group of soldiers causing them to scatter as it hit the floor with an echoing thud! The man cackled once more, now throwing these projectiles non-stop at his enemies. "Isn't it past your bedtime? Maybe I should help tuck you in!" He snickered to himself once more, the various soldiers continuing to dodge.
It seemed as if Bumi had things well in hand, fighting back against the various invaders without even breaking a sweat. Then when all seemed well in hand, a loud bleat was heard from inside the next room! Immediately Bumi stopped, turning around and sprinting back in the direction of the sound. And there he saw it.
The masked figure had a large sword in hand, holding it up to Flopsie's throat, the creature looking wide-eyed with fear. "That's enough, old man. You've had your fun... but now it's time to put an end to this."
Bumi's expression grew more serious, the man glaring at the invader. "Hmmmmph, threatening an old man's pet Goat-gorilla. Have you no class?" The masked figure simply stood silent, continuing to clutch that blade.
" I don't need to have class. I just need to have you. Surrender yourself or your precious pet will be minus a head."
Bumi growled under his breath, seething at the thought of this. "And how do you expect me to believe you? You don't seem like the trustworthy sort. In fact... I can tell you're lying. I am an Earthbender, after all." The king said.
"Oh, don't worry. He's trustworthy. I... on the other hand." And with that Bumi felt a sharp blade being driven in through the back of his stomach, the old man gasping out in pain as it penetrated his skin. He feel to his knees, gasping for air as he clutched at the area. "For such a great Earthbender you're still a senile old geezer." the assailant spoke, pulling free the blade from Bumi and causing him to fall to the floor.
"...Looks like you got me... I guess I'm not as alert as I used to be." Bumi managed to say, sprawled out across the rug below. "What do you hope... to accomplish here... anyway? Once the Earth King finds out... things won't turn out well for you. Not to... mention Aang...."
"Aang? The Avatar? For all you know I could be Aang myself. Now shut up, you old fool. Your death serves a great purpose, rest assured of that." The assassin chuckled under their breath. "Now lie still and die already. Your time has passed.
"You haven't won... you may kill me today, but you'll be sorry soon... enough."
And with that Bumi let forth his last breath, collapsing in a heap on the floor. The two assailants glanced at one another, faces hidden away in those familiar masks. "I'm heading back. I'll leave the rest to you." One said before leaping out the window nearby, seemingly vanishing without a trace. The other nodded, letting go of the creature in his grip. Immediately Flopsie ran over to the corpse of his master, letting forth another loud bleat as it prodded at him.

The next morning the town of Omashu was greeted with a Grisly sight: the limp body of King Bumi strung up in the center of town, a small note hanging from off his neck. The various townspeople looked on in horror, some overwhelmed with tears at the sight.
A small young man walked forward, reaching up and grabbing the note. His eyes filled with horror as he read it out loud. "We have killed your King. We will continue to kill until we have the Avatar. If you do not then we will slaughter this entire town.
You have one day before we kill again. Either surrender us the Avatar or we will be back. And one of you will die."
"Bumi..." the young man said to himself. "I'll... I'll find whose responsible for this. I swear it!"
