Not just that, but October just doesn't feel the same without a Saw film. When a Saw film was released, despite the lack of advertisements, it generally felt like it was an event every October and it brought out the crowds, excitement, and the audience reactions to the traps, twists, and atmosphere was just out of this world.

I know. It was like a new Saw out every October made the whole Halloween season that much more special. It's felt strange these past couple of Octobers not having a new entry. I still wonder if at least the original might get a re-release next October for the 10th anniversary.

I did a mini-marathon last month. Again. Maybe it's just the repeated viewings but Saw 4 seemed much better to me this time around.

I used to think I'd hate Saw, based on what I heard about it. Then my friend told me the first film is incredible, that there really isn't much gore, that it plays out like a mystery rather than an exhibition in sadism, and that most of the nasty stuff you hear about is in your mind rather than on camera. So I saw the 1st film and was impressed with it. I decided to give all the sequels a try. They were a lot more explicit in terms of what they showed, but most of them made up for it in terms of plot.
I think the series should stay where it is. No more sequels, prequels, reboots, or anything. Contrary to what its detractors say, the series was more or less consistent in terms of quality and does not need to be ruined with inferior sequels (Like Hellraiser).
The best entries in the series, in my opinion, are Saw 1, 3, and 6.

To be completely honest, the only Saw movie I ever saw was the first one. It was at complete random when I went over to one of my friend's then-new house at the time (this would have been late 2005). It was about five or six of us hanging around toking on a few hours long break from school, and one of the girls decided to put this in. It was around the period where I wasn't really as interested in horror as I had been in early high school or middle school, but I found it pretty entertaining... didn't think it was really good by any means, but I was okay with it.
Now, I've gotten more back into horror movies, more or less watching things now to have an opinion on them since I built a strong foundation when I was initially interested as a young teenager... so, I guess what I'm saying is it's high time for me to watch the first one again, then the second one, and then the third... from there, we'll see if I try the whole series. This thread just randomly made me want to do this.

Horror icon with an epic grim past and overt personality? Check.
Deep insight on characters who have less screen time than victims in other horror movies yet have more personalities? Check.
The fact that it relies heavily on continuity and attention to detail? Check.
Yeah, the whole film series actually has personality and a good reason to see sequel after sequel to just see what's next for the story. Horror films WISH they could be as deep as this.
Oh and yeah, I actually love the last film. And it's ending. Don't see the hate for it.

I agree, it's actually a very well-done, thoughtful and intricate series that isn't just about pointless bloodshed and killing. I think the whole torture/gore thing is that Saw gets grouped in with Hostel, which is the movie that really started the whole torture craze of the mid-2000s (a craze that was actually pretty short-lived when you think about it). It was interesting to piece the series together and see how the story formed and ended when each new sequel came out.
I already posted my ranking for the series before about once or twice in the thread, but again it goes: 2 1 6 5 4 7 and 3.
Not too many fans seem to like 2 but I've always really enjoyed it as I always found the main game in the house to be intense and the scenes between Eric and Jigsaw are very riveting, and I thought the twists were just as clever and unexpected as the first movie's. 1 is of course the start of it all and a definite 2000s-era Horror classic and 6 for me was almost on par with the first two, bringing back a lot of the intensity and desperation the first two had and I thought the healthcare angle was something clever and relevant.

On the subject, what's everyone's favorite character in the series? I got to say Amanda is mine by quite a good margin. I find she was a very interesting character and had quite the arc over the course of the series. Just a shame she was underutilized in a way.

I bet money I don't have that next October for the original Saw's 10th anniversary we'll get a deluxe Blu-ray set with all seven movies. Maybe a bonus disc with special features, too?

I think they should do a final Saw film and retcon some of the stuff in seven. The director of the 7th was pretty pissed that they forced him to direct this film when he was supposed to direct Paranormal Activity. I say have him or David Hackl create the film they wanted, retcon some of the pointless scenes and traps that were in this one, and add more backstory on why {Spoiler}Dr. Gordon decided to follow Jigsaw, what happened to his family, and they never explored Hoffman still using Strahm's fingerprints as well, and it would've been nice to see some backstory on Strahm as well.

I remember hearing about that. Kevin Greutert was going to direct Paranormal Activity 2 but then got reeled in by Lion's Gate to do Saw VII instead, and I remember he was outspoken about how upset he was about it.
I remember hearing as well that Saw VIII was planned to be released in 2011, but with Saw VI underperforming in 2009, Lion's Gate decided to condense both 7 and 8 into one movie. Explaining why so much of it felt so jumbled :/

Explaining why so much of it felt so jumbled :/ Saw, at that time, just ran into an extremely hyped film that was Paranormal Activity and it still made its money back. I don't know why Lionsgate felt that it underperformed, all of the other Saw films made a lot of money, so one film "underperforming" shouldn't have discouraged them that much. They should've just stuck to the game plan and just continued to release the sequels until the 8th one. It's not like they were $200 million blockbusters.

I agree that there could have been 8.
Listening to the DVD commentary on the Saw 3D/VII/Final Chapter DVD makes me sad at what could have been.

I think the general public probably just got burned out on the series by the time Saw VI came out. There was a sizable decline in profits beginning with Saw V. Factor that plus Paranormal Activity being such a sensation at the time and the general public didn't care for the next Saw.

Factor that plus Paranormal Activity being such a sensation at the time and the general public didn't care for the next Saw. Which confuses me because by the time Paranormal Activity 2 came out I was already burned out by it. The first Paranormal Activity was and is the best one, still creeps me out, and the atmosphere is just intense. However, I just don't understand how people can still be scared by the loud noises, growling, slamming cabinet doors, or Kate running at the person screaming like a demon. It's just repetitive now whereas with Saw it had a unique and twisted storyline that kept you invested.
