Ok, first let me explain something before anyone posts "yeah and the sky is blue". I've been a fan since the late 80's. I have only ever missed 2 PPVs since 1989. I LOVE just about everything WWF from 1988-1997. I used to write huge, long-winded write-up's of shows from this period and constantly bang on about how great it was. So over the last few days I've been watching some shows from 1995-1997 (the SummerSlams and Survivor Series to be exact) and listening to it today, it hit me.... Vince McMahon really was pretty crap on commentary.
We all know the cliches....
"He got him.....(oh no, he didn't)" "What a manoeuvre" "BBBBBBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKK BODY DROP" and of course, the most ridiculous of them all.. "Adam Bomb's gonna win the Rumble!"
I think I was blinded by nostalgia and never noticed how bad he was. I know the commentary teams never really had consistent members back then as it was after Gorilla/Brain and before JR/Lawler but Vince really was crap and it only hit me today after watching these shows for at least the 10th time.
Anyone else have similar issues with being blinded by nostalgia and when they've gone back and looked again, realised it wasn't that great? Or in some cases, downright terrible?

I think he's a lot better than the Cole/Lawler duo today. At least Vince always sounded genuinely enthusiastic and excited by everything that was happening, not like he was phoning it in.

I don't understand why he talked in that voice. It's pitched higher and out of breath or something...You know what I mean, but I can't describe it.

Eh, I liked clean cut announcer Vince. Cole does have his moments, but as previously stated, he does have a tendency at times to rip on not-perfect segments or not show any real interest in lower card matches. Vince wasn't the most knowledgable guy as far as movesets, but he made practically everything seem important. Plus he was an ideal straight man to Ventura.

I was never really a fan of Vince as commentator, I always liked his partner be it King/JR/Mr Perfect/Gorilla
I'll give credit where it's due he did hve some funny quips sometimes.
But I'll take Vince over Cole/Current King

I liked Vince as an announcer, but he was better in the 80's and early 90's when he was paired with people like Jesse Ventura, Bobby Heenan, and Randy Savage.
By 1994 or 1995, his commentary work seemed to go downhill. But I still enjoy most of his commentary...

But yeah, it sounds like he's running out of breath or totally about to use the last bit of air in his lungs. Just awful...

Would it work in 2013? Not a chance. But it fit the product perfectly at the time. Easily one of my all-time favorite announcers.

It was horrible, corny, terrible etc
ONE TWO AAAAAAAAND HE GOT HIM NO HE DID'T GET HIM.
He's spend so long saying "aaaand" that they'd be on their feet before he told us he didn't get him.

I wish they would do the voice-over, running down the card a'la Royal Rumble, with Vince providing the voice of course, again.
"HACKSAW" JIM DUGGAN! SKINNER! THE UNDERTAKER! "THE IMMORTAL" HULK HOGAN!
IT'S TIME TO RUMBLE! THE ROOOOOOYAL RUMBLEEEeeee!
All in that throat-killing over-the-top voice. I miss that kind of thing.

When he did the battle royal in 2009 on commentary I thought he still had it. I grew up with Vince on commentary so I like it.

Since I didn't really get big into watching until around 1998 and I wasn't, y'know, alive in the 80s, I can't say I have a lot of nostalgia for Vince as a commentator, but any time I do look back on something with it, I like him. It's weird how different he sounds doing that from how he usually does (be it as a character or how he actually speaks), but I enjoy it. And he and Ventura pretty much completely killed Cole and King's usual work on that battle royal they handled together a few years back.

I see a ton of Vince's influence in Cole's commentary and whilst Vince's commentary wasn't that bad, it was fitting of it's time. Cole's just doesn't work and more often then not just telegraphs false finishes or swerves. I'm kinda curious how Cole's commentary would have shaped up without Vince's influence.

Vince McMahon's commentary is so bad that he makes Tony Schiavone look like Bobby Heenan. That weird voice that he uses is just eurgh.

I liked him on commentary. He was no JR and his catchphrases were rather bad, but he always seemed enthusiastic and therefore made pretty much every match seem important and exctiting (at least to him)... And man, he must have lost his voice every night.
