He might have been bankable in 2004. MOS was not the huge hit WB wanted no matter how they spin it. It got smoked by a weak IM3 and this is what they come up with for Batman? This is a plate full of pee. There was no way that MOS was ever going to equal Iron Man 3 numbers given the track record of the latter franchise since '08 vs a reboot. That can't possibly realistically be considered a disappointment. It's still Superman. Maybe the most well known super hero. WB can spin it anyway they want but MOS did not hit the marks they were banking on.

I was watching some Jay and Silent Bob and realized the Good Will Hunting 2 scene has two Batmen in it, and later in the film we have a Joker. Too cool.

WB can spin it anyway they want but MOS did not hit the marks they were banking on. Batman Begins didn't exactly do monster numbers either. If I am not mistaken it'd budget was $175 million and it did $300 something million world wide. Of course, I could be wrong, but it didn't exactly set the world on fire during its release. Man of Steel did what it needed to do and that was reintroduce Superman in a different, unique, and modern fashion. It's sequel given that it'll be the first time Batman and Superman appear on the big screen will be the biggest test. However, it IS going up against Avengers 2.

ratedrnightwing, do you mind disclosing the marks they were banking on? you seem to speak with your opinion as if it is unadulterated fact.

I like Affleck a lot. I don't love his casting as Batman, but I don't hate it, either.

This is just an op-ed piece merely posing the question. What's proven is that Man of Steel made 650 million dollars worldwide. That's fact. The film was budgeted at 175 million, but looks like it went over by 25-50 million dollars. So let's go real high on that and say it was 225 million dollars. They more than doubled that cost. You're telling me that that's not good enough? And you're using an inquisitive article that merely asks, with no proof whatsoever? I could just as easily say that Warner Brothers is just fine with the film, probably knew that they would have to prove to moviegoers that the movie wouldn't suck like the last 2 before it, and are banking on Superman vs. Batman being the billion dollar film they hoped for. I'm not a dick, though. I'm just merely asking how they could be upset with that take.

I'd like to remind everyone that one of the most remarkable performances in the last decade was Joker played by a man best known for playing a gay cowboy and a wannabe knight.
I'll reserve judgment. I just wish they were hiring Ben Affleck as the director, instead of Snyder, but I'll live.

This sums up exactly why it won't work. Wow... what a bitch. I really like Affleck (he was the bomb in Phantoms, yo), but I laughed too hard at this. I would marry the first woman I dated who said something was right between "your whole family died and you have full blown AIDS." Love this woman.

The bad thing about this is that with this and starring in David Fincher's movie adaptation of 'Gone Girl'... Affleck may be too busy to do what he is been doing best recently and that is directing movies.
According to imdb that he is about to direct something called 'Live By Night (2014)' but I would not be surprised if that is pushed back.
He has already dropped directing 'The Stand' movie based on Stephen King's massive novel.

Well, imo he was fine in Daredevil - not his fault many other things were wrong with it. I guess what it means is that they are not carrying on with that bloke in Rises taking on the Batmantle.
Then again who would have thought Robert Downey Jr. would do so well as Stark...

Ok I must ask what drugs were they smoking when they castled Ben Affleck as batman. They were smoking money they made off Ledger as the Joker, the last guy who was sh*t upon by nerds as a bad casting decision. They made a lot of it. A LOT.

Without going through 9 pages of this thread can anybody sum up the reasons why Affleck will make a bad Batman/Bruce Wayne other than just....because Ben Affleck?
I watched that video above and I still don't get it. I thought everyone had moved on from the early 2000s Affleck hate?
What should be of more concern is that they're keeping Snyder on, a man who I don't think has directed a 'great' film yet.

Though, that could have been offset by the adspace in the film, but still...

Then again who would have thought Robert Downey Jr. would do so well as Stark... Robert Downey Jr playing a man who is seen as brilliant but is affected by his own demons and vices to get that full potential, and who rises from the ashes to reinvent himself for the better? Yeah, no one saw that working out....
