I knew this thread would come to this. Should we lock it now or do 5 pages of people fighting about being heels or just being awful? Sorry, I just can't quite wrap my head around people complaining about not being able to call somebody with a disability 'retard' in an insulting manner. "Not being able to" is inaccurate. You're perfectly able to insult retards to their face. There will just be repurcussions-- WWE sponsors will be lost. Vince will lose millions overnight, quite literally. The entire company will be dragged through the mud and in the worst case, nobody will be buying tickets to take their families out to a night at a house show/live event anymore as a result. Is this right? I'm of the opinion that just because one person (let's say you for example) feels outraged by someone else exercising their Freedom of Speech to mock retards shouldn't mean that you can impose your belief system on me. Maybe I grew up next to a house full of retards who constantly bullied me everyday, and thus I get a Driver's High effect everytime I utter the word 'retard' in an insulting manner. You don't know my life. In any case, free speech trumps anybody's butt hurt always. But personal freedom always trumps free speech. In conclusion, as long as you don't die from me calling you a retard, man up and deal with it.

Wow, I never knew that.
Yet another reason for me to avoid the Attitude Era.

Because the word "retard" is not slang.......it's a normal word; in this case a shortened version of the actual and long-standing medical description. If someone's mental processes and development has been delayed, then they are "retarded." Long before kids yelled it as an insult to other kids they didn't like, it was - and still is - a word found in the dictionary with actual meaning. .....so naturally, the PC hacks says the word "retard" in any usage cannot be allowed and you're a racist bigot if you do.

Considering every time it was stated in the DX feud was by the outright heels, it's a mixed area to discuss on, given DX were cool heels there's a lot to consider but it's basically a bi-product of the era as others have said. Sorry, I just can't quite wrap my head around people complaining about not being able to call somebody with a disability 'retard' in an insulting manner. Because the word "retard" is not slang.......it's a normal word; in this case a shortened version of the actual and long-standing medical description. Worth reading - www.nytimes.com/2013/03/03/opinion/sunday/a-word-gone-wrong.html?_r=0It is a word that means something BUT if you're saying "huh, you stupid retard" to someone then it is a slur. Simple as that. If you want to say someone's acting foolish or not picked up on something then saying that they've not picked up on something is preferable. To quote Chris Catalyst, you call me such a drama queen because I'm politically correct, but where I'm from all that means is treating people with respect.

My mom worked at a company that provided many opportunities to mentally disabled people, so the word was always a taboo in my house. Besides, the word itself just irks me. Why not "The Big Red Dumbass"? "The Big Red Dipshit"? There's lots of ways to call someone stupid without using something that would unnecessarily piss off people who deal with people with mental conditions every day.

Retard also wasn't quite as taboo of an insult as it is now. This is the correct answer. People who weren't watching at the time seem shocked at stuff like that, or Lawler using the "f" word, but society was different in the 90's, especially the late-90's.

In conclusion, as long as you don't die from me calling you a retard, man up and deal with it. Freedom of speech does not mean what you think it means. It does not mean the freedom to say anything without criticism. It means that you won't be censored by a government. The consequence of you using your speech freely is that everyone else is able to use their speech freely and tell you you're acting like a complete prat, or for companies to lose sponsors and interest. What you call 'butt hurt', we call our freedom of speech. And freedoms come with responsibilities. If it's so hard for you to speak without oppressing the downtrodden in society, well... Man up and deal with it. Retard also wasn't quite as taboo of an insult as it is now. This is the correct answer. People who weren't watching at the time seem shocked at stuff like that, or Lawler using the "f" word, but society was different in the 90's, especially the late-90's. These words were still offensive back then, it's just that the people in charge didn't care who they were offending.

Personally, I find retard a stretch in terms of "words we shouldn't use". Sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, nationality, these things should not be referred to in a derogatory manner. But the words "idiot" and "moron" were once medical terms for people with IQs under a certain level, and those have stayed a firm part of our lexicon. Saying retard is just a way to say someone is stupid, in an over the top manner. It's not mocking an entire group's traditions or foundations of life in the way that using race/sex orientation slurs is. The term now is mentally challenged anyway, so using "retard" shouldn't even matter anymore. Mentally challenged people don't hold their retardation near and dear to them.
I think this whole issue is more complex than "these words you just can't say because they're offensive". But we're err'ing on the side of caution now, and that's fine, doesn't affect my life negatively. I don't feel reeled in like I can't say all this crazy hurtful shit I want to say. I just think that there is a bit of knee-jerk reaction and over-sensitivity to words, and that it's hard to see the line sometimes. Like CM Punk calling that fan fat a few weeks ago, that was referred to as "bullying". Can every insult be categorized as bullying now? And anyway, being fat is something you can control (I know that's a discussion too, but overall, it's a discipline/emotional issue, not a physiological one). That makes it an acceptable target in my eyes.
I may be way off base here, but it's how I feel. I like these discussions as long as they can stay civil.

This sounds like something that the Rock would say.
Also, Retard is still a bit of a sensitive thing to say. May god help you if you say it around someone who knows someone, or related to, someone who is mentally retard/developmentally delayed.

Once, the N-word was a socially acceptable word for black people. Social parameters change.

This is my only beef with PC culture, when people start getting slammed for using a word properly because it sounds like something offensive. I mean, if I'm not mistaken, the official medical term for that family of developmental problems is still "mental retardation". I'm all for eliminating it as an insult, but retard and retardation still have a valid place in the English language
