In this community full of rumors and whatnot, it'd be interesting to see who was apparently in line for a title run (whether it be according to rumors, plans, or from the wrestler's mouth).
Off the top of my head I can think of for the WWE title at least:
Ted DiBiase (WM IV) Owen Hart Bad News Brown Lex Luger Ludvig Borga Rikishi (Heel Turn) Chyna Vladimir Kozlov Bret Hart (WM 26)
Anyone else? Any input/insight on the ones I've already listed? What about the NWA title? WCW? Midcard belts?

Out of all of those allegedly-rumored guys, Owen and DiBiase are the only two that would have been alright, but I still think for them to never have won it is still OK ultimately.

I'm pretty sure Brutus Beefcake was supposed to win the Intercontinental title at SummerSlam '90, but the near-fatal parasailing accident put an end to that.
I heard somewhere that the plan for WrestleMania IX was for Tatanka to win the I-C belt, but Shawn Michaels got the outcome changed.

It certainly looked as if Billy Gunn was going after the IC title in 1999, then he went and won the Hardcore title for no reason and defended it at WM 15. He eventually went and won the belt a year or two later, but still...

I remember Muhammad Hassan was supposed to at least get a championship match before all the controversy started.

From the rumor mills and dirt sheets as far as i can remember:
Wade Barrett Matt Hardy Ted Dibiase Jr (i remember reading he was going to get a monster push, beginning with a Wrestlemania match against Taker) Cody Rhodes becoming WHC Bobby Lashley Drew McIntyre John Morrison Chris Masters
The list can go on and on. The WWE has always done the yo-yo push and have soured on guys that they were once in love with. I am sure there are quite a few guys that are lower on the totem pole now that at one point were being touted as can't miss prospects and future main eventers.

Isn't the story that Russo talked McMahon into changing it so that Billy won the Hardcore title and Road Dogg the IC title, just to swerve the internet message boards?

What is this rumor of Bret Hart winning the championship at WM 26?

There was supposed to be a tag match with Cena and Bret vs Batista and Vince, where the person who won the fall won the title.

God I hope they weren't seriously going to put the title on Bret "Hitting me anywhere could kill me, man" Hart in 2010.

Short of any drastically altered long - term booking, I can't see how Bad News Brown winning the title could have worked.

Ahmed Johnson at least thought he was winning the belt from Undertaker at some point in 97 after he joined the Nation, according to Faarooq, who said everyone just laughed at him when he said "you know I'm not sure if I'm ready to carry the company".

I still think they could bring Chyna back so she can win the World Title. Maybe after Triple H beats Daniel Bryan for it. A feud for the ages!!
