I saw David Tennant in a play put on by the RSC about five years before he got the role as the Doctor.
I saw the Darkness as a support band about six months before they blew up and became famous. They became a running joke between my friend and I because of how much we hated them so we were really surprised when they had all of that success.

I grew up with Amy Heideman of the musical group/d-list pop duo Karmin. About a minute after reading this, I opened up one of the free local papers here and the first thing I saw was an ad for Karmin playing a free show here next Saturday on Fremont Street.

I also knew Drake back when he Jimmy in Degrassi. I knew I forgot to mention someone. Whenever I see Drake these days, I cannot shake the Jimmy character.

I had a few classes with the rapper Plies in high school. He was always very mild mannered, one of the last guys I would have figured to be in the rap game.

I remember Zach Galifianakis in his show Late World with Zach. I liked the odd humor and skits. Funny looking at the promos for the show where he would call himself an obscure comedian being given a show.

Do athletes count? Because David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays was the first pitcher to me after coach pitch baseball at a practice. Dude was throwing junk at age 12

I remember seeing Jim Carey's stand-up act on TV a few times here in Canada.
I also swear I saw Rob Schneider on an episode of "Night Court" before he started on SNL. He was a defendant, a funeral director who wanted to put the "FUN" back into funeral. The deceased's coffin had a bumper sticker that read "I'd rather be breathing".

not a massive celeb but I went to grade school with NHL tough guy Zack Stortini. he was a bit of a dullard and a thus and he beat me up a few times for fun (he's about a foot and a half taller than me, for the record). not really surprised what he ended up doing with his life.

Yeah I was the one who inspired the op. Still feels like a badge of honor. I was also surprised Sofia hosted an NYC-area cable show circa 2001. She did a lot pre-Modern Family Did Sofia Vergara ever work with Odalys Garcia? I'd have loved that foursome, er, pair! Not that I can remember. Shame Odalys virtually fell off the face of the earth If it counts, I went to high school around the same time as Rob Cesternino of Survivor fame and sat behind his sister in Spanish class.

Before Lost, before LOTR, he was on "Hetty Wainthropp Investigates," a British show they used to have on Mystery! they filmed 90% of that in east Lancashire and I'm 90% certain when they filmed at the Blackburn train/bus station I was in a background shot that made it past the edit. I really need to pick that up on dvd for my parents as they loved the show when it was shown on tv.

Okay, here's an example of someone who isn't TOTALLY famous but I actually knew personally. JoJo GoGo from the first season of "Bad Girls Club," aka Cocktail from "For The Love of Ray J" is someone who I actually knew when I was a kid. My grandma used to watch her and her younger brother.

I played against Jeffrey Hammonds for 3 years in high school baseball and played with him in American Legion one year. Nice guy and turned down draft after HS to go to college. Had a decent career in the majors.

The first time I ever heard of Lady Gaga was when she performed "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" with the Pet Shop Boys (doing the Dusty parts, obviously).

My sister and Elisabeth Shue were in the same grade and shared a lot of classes.
I took part in a Boy Scout Eagle ceremony that included her brother Andrew Shue years before he starred on Melrose Place.
