I feel sorry for the Malaysian prime minister. All the poor guy ever does is hold press conferences about crashed planes. And there was that assassination attempt by Derek Zoolander when he visited the US for a fashion show.

Kind of spooky and eerie this happens on the 18th anniversary of TWA Flight 800 Another eerie coincidence: the plane for Flight 17 first flew on July 17, 1997 - 17 years ago.

On the bright side: The blowback against Russia for this(If of course they are at least partially responsible through their separatists) could be the diplomatic opening needed to push them out of Ukraine.
Probably not the best thing to be thinking about right now but there you go.

On conspiracy theories: There are way too many ways secrets like that could get out for me to think they're as prominent as some would like to think.

No terrorism , just jammed computer that got triggered accidentaly when the plane flew over the area imo.

Folks, strong reminder here to keep the political theories out of this at this time. Discussing the tragedy is fine, discussing things like ramifications and culpability on a political level are not.

Obama has officially confirmed that at least one US citizen was killed on this flight.

Yes , it was shot down.....but if it was computer generated it could've been an accident where the defence system somehow jammed and fired a missile cuz it mistakenly thought the plane was a military threat , could prolly happen in extreme cases. If that's the case then it's not really terrorism but a sad accident.

They do not decide for themselves what targets are to be destroyed.

These SAM's require people to operate and launch manually. It's sophisticated technology. The f***up involved was human, not computer. These sorts of things just don't fire on their own.

If that's the case then it's not really terrorism but a sad accident. Ah, for some reason I thought you were angling towards an on-board malfunction bringing the plane down, my bad. That said, as has been explained, while the guidance systems on surface-to-air missiles are automated and the targeting systems on the ground are either often partially automated (though most smaller ones are still manually operated), the birds don't fly without human authorisation, and that's only after going through a number of checks to determine if the target is friend, foe, or civilian. So, either somebody f***ed up big-time, or it was a deliberate attack on a civilian plane.

Saw that on the news earlier, supposedly they were talking to Russian intelligence, which if true doesn't look good for Russia. I mean they already provided the weaponry and probably training or even people that know how to use it. Russia is f***ing up.

Great, so not only did they shoot down a civilian plane for no reason, it was one full of people who were dedicating their lives to literally saving humanity. Whoever ordered the plane shot and whoever fired better hope their names never get out.
