The evidence is seeming to indicate that it was perpetrated by the Russian-backed separatist rebels, likely due to military incompetence (i.e. "there's something flying up there! It may be an enemy plane!" "We have radar, radio, and a telescope to confirm..." "No! Shoot now!").
All I'll say to avoid crossing the "no politics" line is: this is something that the rebels, and by association, Vladimir Putin, will not be able to live down. There's going to be international hell to pay.

Hearing about this at work got me so angry.
It's a reminder of how messed up our world is.
I wish all the families the best during these difficult times.

Supposedly the Russian state-owned media is running the story that states that Ukraine shot the plane down in an attempt to shoot down Vladimir Putin himself. I cannot believe that they would expect anyone to actually believe that.

I hate to say it, but the way this story is unfolding, no way is this thread staying up for long. Politics are way too wrapped up in this story.
Let me just say this... I'll be damned if I know, regardless of who is at fault, what an appropriate response is. All I know is 300 people are dead through no fault of their own and someone, somewhere, decided arbitrarily that their lives must end.
How in the world do you respond to that? I mean, it's just beyond me.

This is reminding me of my early twentieth century history lessons. Particully of an event that happened 99 years ago.
Won't go into details due to the political nature. But if you go to Wikipedia and search 'RMS Lusitania' you should know what I'm getting at.

Reports saying the scene has been contaminated, and confirmation that OSCE workers have been turned away from the site. There is so much I want to say about the people responsible, but alas we have rules for a good reason.

You know, I'm hesitating to even mention headlines anymore. So much political involved and facts seem to be in short supply. Mods, I think we need some sort of ruling here, since Russian media and Reuters are reporting vastly different stories and I'm scared to post even one headline because of the nature of the story or at the risk of being inflammatory.

I'm sure investigators will get to the bottom of it, after Russian rebels first spend a few weeks walking around the crash site, kicking around debris, looting belongings and generally contaminating the scene.

Based on the reports I've been seeing, they've practically picked the site clean already. At this stage I doubt an investigation will uncover more than the missile's point of impact.

To say nothing that they are also collecting the bodies as well. After two days. And why do the rebels need to bring in armed troops and a TANK into the site? Oh and keep the investigators from the site.

On a similar note, but for different reasons, I absolutely refuse to watch the news on this because all I can think about is an incident on July 3rd sixteen years ago that will make me mad if I do. So I'll chat with you ruffians instead.

One lesson to be learned from this is that European nations in particular should consider alternative sources of natural gas. The last thing you want is to be dependent on Russia. That will hit Russia the hardest. No point having vast natural resources if there's no one to sell it to.

It's nuts. The crash site is an armed camp, all the bodies were removed with only cursory inspections allowed by international investigators to confirm they were bodies and there is video of one of the rebels walking off with one of the black boxes in his hands. Then comes announcement that the boxes are found and ready to be turned over... in pieces.

The footage of them loading bodies onto the back of wagons and then transporting them via refridgerated train carriages like cattle is stomach turning. They are seemingly doing everything they can to be as insensitive as possible.

The more I hear about this the more it pisses me off. And what pisses me off even more is that these assholes are probably going to get away with it because Russia has their back.

Sky News reporter on the scene further contaminated evidence. They were actually going through a passenger's belongings on air.
