After looking at some stuff today about SummerSlam last night, I just have to say Roman Reigns is getting absolutely torn apart for no damn reason by people for last night. I watched SummerSlam, thought that Reigns got a good reaction (especially considering the spot of the card he had to wrestle in) and had a pretty good match with Orton. At first it seemed like people reacted fondly to it.
But now I'm looking at a few different places and I'm seeing people talk about how crappy the match was, how no one cared about Reigns, things like that. Did we watch two different shows? Am I just going crazy? I cannot fathom how so many people are worried about him getting pushed when he was both over and put on a good performance last night to the point where they think everything he does suck at this point. It's clear to me now that hating Roman Reigns is the cool thing to do, like it was/is for John Cena. Doesn't matter if he's doing well, everyone will say he sucks and that's just not fair for a guy who's on the upstart of his career. Like can people give the guy a chance to succeed in a big role before they pass judgement about how he'll perform?

Roman is suffering because WWE made it obvious early in the Shield's run that he was going to be the Chosen One and booked him as such. People like you more when they think the establishment is out to keep you down than being the golden child.

His tenure on WWE TV is about to be 2 years. His fomer teammates have gone through changes in that time while he stayed basically the same. Also WWE is not good with subtlety booking.

Orton works old school heel. Very slow paced in order to give the babyface his big spots. The spots didn't resonate with the crowd. If the agents, writers & Reigns himself don't know ahead of time that they aren't getting the desired reactions, then his performance is going to be criticized.
He is working with the perfect guy to set him up, so while he's a young guy & deserves patience, a long look at him as a top singles babyface should be taken.

Yeah, it's mostly that the obviousness of his push is grating. It's like, OK, WWE wants this guy to be their #1 guy, and has since the Shield started. Why?
That then opens him up to far more criticism than he would get otherwise.
I do think that his finishing sequence is hugely flawed. He needs to separate out the Superman punch and the spear instead of doing one after the other; watching him go to the corner to play to the crowd while waiting for his opponent to get up, twice in a row, is just not a good standard ending to a match. Everything else I see in him is, well, fine. It's never more than fine, but he is generally a perfectly decent wrestler.

I think that roman reigns could be a great face for the company, but WM XXXI should be for him, what WM XX was for Cena, rather than his crowning moment as the top face in the WWE.
I fail to see how he will get so over to the point of no backfiring by WM XXXI

My opinion, FWIW:
Fair criticism: WWE does not know how to push him properly, and the fact that they telegraphed his accession rather than letting it happen more organically is making it hard for him.
Unfair criticism: Roman Reigns is not talented, his terrible on the mic, doesn't deserve a push.

People like you more when they think the establishment is out to keep you down than being the golden child. That's the difference between Reigns and Cena. Reigns was the Chosen One from day one. Cena was the guy they were stuck with because Lesnar left and Randy Orton shit in bags. |

Reigns was over with the Summerslam crowd.
Orton was excellent but Reigns more than played his part in putting on a good PPV match.

I like him, I enjoyed the match and I think he is getting complaints because they are pushing him too hard in their eyes. People will always find something to complain about, right now I am greatly enjoying the product.

A fair chance starts with the company giving you a fair chance along with everyone else. When anyone within the company starts proclaiming that he's going to be the future while not clearly being ready anytime soon, well you're going to get some criticism.
WWE has a large pool of talent right now. I would love nothing more than for Reigns to outperform each of those people and prove why he is the future.
So really, it's the company's fault, not his. It really proves that you can't break through the glass ceiling if the company has it's sights elsewhere. Perhaps maybe a year or two down the line, but really I cannot fathom this "future" that anyone proclaims from Reigns right now.

Writing him off now is unfair. And don't say HE'S HAD 2 YEARS TO IMPROVE because he was stuck in tag matches the whole time.

Cena was the guy they were stuck with because Lesnar left and Randy Orton shit in bags. Naw, Cena was a golden child in OVW and his first couple of months on the main roster. When his rapper gimmick caught on with the crowd to where it was moving past a midcard act and John's work ethic pleased management was when he got the rocket ship push. Even before Lesnar left, Cena was a focal point on WWE programming and was a heir apparent. Roman got similar treatment but didn't having to go through the humbling period WWE does to the new guys had to deal with. |

This is my opinion on the fellow:
He very well may improve significantly over time, but I think he flat-out sucks right now. That includes his in-ring work and mic work. While not his fault, nepotism and his looks are his best attributes. The way they're booking him, he'll definitely be the next Cena. One portion of the crowd will cheer him, while the rest will boo the hell out of him because they're tired of him being crammed down their throats.

But they had years of previous wrestling experience before coming to WWE. This is Roman's first wrestling company. He didn't get the usual Samoan treatment of training and wrestling for Afa before joining WWE. |

I gave Reigns a fair chance in The Shield. Once I figured out they're just using Rollins and Ambrose to make him a star it pissed me off. Then when Ambrose and Rollins wrestled for 25 minutes in the 6 man tags and Reigns just came in at the end and stole the spotlight from the hard work Rollins and Ambrose did, that's when I gave up on him. That's where he died for me and now I will and can not like him again. WWE's booking ruined him for me.
Oh and that damn duckface he does... F that.
