I think that having a series of people adopt the Red Hood persona would be both a good thing and confound things even more. As far as continuity goes, I don't mind if they turn things on their head. Smallville went pretty well and they took established continuity as mere suggestions at times. One thing that confuses me because I don't obsess over these things. This is the second incarnation where I noticed that Jim's wife/fiance is named Barbara. I thought Barbara Gordon was Batgirl/Oracle, not her mom.
In the comics (at least pre-Nu52, don't know about the current continuity) Jim Gordon had two wives. The first was named Barbara, she was Gordon's wife when he first moved to Gotham and, depending on continuity, was either the mother or adopted mother of the younger Barbara who would become Batgirl/Oracle. She was also the mother Gordon's son, James Jr. They would eventually divorce. Gordon's second wife, the one people who've been reading the comics for the last thirty years would be more familiar with, was Sarah Essen, a police detective who Gordon had an affair with while still married to Barbara. She was killed during the No Man's Land story which was written... fifteen years ago?! Damn, I'm old. So basically Barbara and her Mom had the same name. In something that I missed half-paying attention to the show, Sarah Essen is also in this show. She's Gordon and Bullock's boss, so... I thought Gotham was okay. Some of the character introductions were too on the nose. We didn't need for Bullock to tell Edward Nygma to stop speaking in riddles. We didn't need a kid who could become Poison Ivy to actually...have...the...name...Ivy. With the rate this show is going, the way we'll know who the Joker is is that we'll literally be introduced to a guy introducing himself as Joseph Kerr as he looks straight down the barrel of the camera and the music gets all Hans Zimmer and dramatic. I'm enjoying Jada Pinkett-Smith as much as I can and a part of me does wonder if she actually goes all Dr. Lecter and eats people (one of her goons talking about her "peculiar tastes" while hanging the dudes up in a meat locker makes me wonder if that will actually be a reveal at some point), because I know damn well she's going to get got the moment Oswald gets his sea legs. And when Fish gets got I can only hope her character makes the transition to the comic.

Second episode is much improved from the first. Penguin is awesome, but the breakout character for me is Falcone.

I'm giving Gotham the season, but two episodes in, I'm just not feeling it. Aside from Bruce and Gordon, there's nobody to LIKE in this show. Even Alfred, friggin' ALFRED, is a prick here. All dark, no resolutions, just not really for me so far.

All dark, no resolutions, just not really for me so far. Honestly that is how they were, I feel like this show is basically Year One with little homages to the modern era stuff. Frank Miller wrote Year One so of course its going to be dark and gritty. If you look at Alfred's origin you can understand why he is a prick as well

Cobblepot is definitely the standout, so far. And the show must have a serious budget, with all the scenery chewing. But, all-in-all, I'm liking it.

If they do a show that has a young Bruce Wayne and we don't get Thomas Elliot, it will be all kinds of unacceptable.

I don't really get this half-gritty half-jokey thing they're aiming it. It just doesn't work. Also, they really need to chill the hell out with the obsession with the villains in Batman's future and being so on the nose about them.

Holy crap Oswald is awesome, kudos to Robin Lord-Taylor for his performance. I kinda treat the show as Penguin's Origin more than anything else. Oh he's the "breakout character" so far. I think it will be like Joker after The Dark Knight. Joker was always popular, but after TDK his popularity skyrocketed. I can see that happening for Penguin, not on Joker's level obviously, and in response he gets a bigger role. So Gotham becomes about Gordon, Penguin, and Batman's origins. That being said, right now he's my choice as to who ordered the hit on the Waynes. He wants to start a war, with Fish, Falcone, and everyone else fighting for power. This way he can slip in and take power from Fish, and Falcone and rule Gotham. We know he already tried to play Fish and Falcone, and even told Gordon that a war was coming, and tried to align with him.
