well. I just watched the entire series. And here's a pic I made that sums up the final season after it jumped to CBS

I remember that really shitty green screen ocean effect in the opening credits

I'd like to think that the Lamberts were secretly murderers.
It all started with original Mark, it seemed that Frank didn't like him, so they offed him. They kidnapped the kid from Beethoven and brainwashed him into believing he was their son.
Next to go was the mother and sister of Carol because they ate all the food.
Life seemed to be good after that. Unfortunately the Lamberts craved blood and concluded that Cody would be next. They brutally attacked him and left him for dead.
To fill the void, they figured they'd bring their friend Flash in. Unfortunately, Cody was still alive and well and blackmailed the Lamberts, with no choice...they killed Flash.
Carol and Frank had a seventh child Lily, unfortunately Karen being the attention whore didn't like the baby getting attention, so it was killed. The Lamberts once again resorted to kidnapping the Life cereal girl.
By this point, it was too much and Brendon was going to inform on them, so JT and Cody went Joe Pesci in Casino on him.
Jean Luc was brought in, but Frank recognized he was actually Balki, so he didn't make it out alive either.
After that, the family went on the run. Perhaps Carol one day woke up and realized it was all a dream, then discovered Frank showering.

I remember there was an episode early in the show's run in which Frank and JT are sitting on the couch watching their beloved Green Bay Packers. The thing though is they're wearing Packers long sleeve Packers shirts, which wouldn't be so odd if it wasn't for the fact that the shirts are silver and black. So I figure someone in prop or wardrobe design was just like "Packers shirts? I don't know anything about football! I do drive past the L.A. Coliseum on my way to work every day and I know the football guys there wear silver and black. So I guess that's what these people wear?"

You know what would surprise me even more? Is if someone remembered Meego.
Meego was about a 9,000 year old shape shifting alien who becomes a Canadian babysitter for 3 children. It stars Balki, Ed Begley, Jr, Harriet the Spy, the kid from Jerry Maguire and Rimshot the dog from the Ernest movies. Oh and Steve Urkel guest starred, as did several stars from Gilligan's Island. How did this not get picked up for more than 6 episodes?

I remember enjoying the early seasons of Step by Step but gave up on it around the time Cody left. I have only the vaguest of memories of Flash and never even knew about Balki being on it until I read this thread.

Meego seems really familiar, I might have seen it.
I liked watching Step By Step a lot, but much of it isn't really that memorable. I recall them adding Jason Marsden to the cast at one point.

Step by Step? Day by day.
When it was with the Grandma and Aunt the show was pretty weak, but the addition of Cody gave it some life. Then he left and was replaced by Bronson Pinchot doing a French accent.

Funnily enough, given his voice acting work, he was added to many Disney shows as well, such Weekenders having him as the main character.

The daughter from My Two Dads was the oldest daughter in this show, if memory serves me well. I had a small crush on her back in the day, though the flame I carried for the Lubbock Babes (particularly Jamie Luner) was more intense.

I remember that really shitty green screen ocean effect in the opening credits Yeah, it was pretty obvious to anyone whose been to Magic Mountain that that was Magic Mountain...which has no lake next to it. They also had one of the worst anti-drug episodes ever, towards the end. The middle girl and her boyfriend want to smoke weed, so they go to her boyfriend's uncle to get some. At one point the uncle looks at his hand and says "whoa, I think my hand's broken! Nah, I'm just looking at the back of it. That's how good this stuff really is." Just terrible.
