I definitely agree about Home Improvement. It never felt the need to gimmick itself the way that so many other shows did. I think it helped that Allen was a legit comedian and knew that it was up to him to carry the show at all times, too many other shows depended too much on supporting characters who would eventually become the stars of the show. And while Home Improvement did decline in quality once Thomas left the show, it was still head and shoulders above a lot of the other shows that ran as long. Anyone ever remember the episode of Step By Step where JT and Rich go down to Mexico on Spring Break so they could eat burritos? Then they got robbed. That's when I knew the quality was long long gone. At less when someone left Home Improvement they had a story behind it to write them out which why I think the show holds up and doesn't come off nearly as badly written or cheesy like the other shows in that line up. Like nobody just all of sudden left without a trace. That what I liked about the whole plot of the show was there wasn't a time where they try to replace someone with a "look a like" anything. Agreed. Home Improvement did stoop to some gimmicky stuff, like celeb guests, but it still felt much more organic than a lot of the shows did, even with the outlandish screw ups of Tim.
