As far as TGIF shows that were actually decent, I think Dinosaurs still holds up well.

I think with nostalgia, as with all things, it requires some perspective. Even in Step by Step's heyday, it was never considered a "good" show. It can still be enjoyed, but by someone with at least some knowledge of the show or what the TGIF lineup was about. I would consider Family Matters a pretty funny show up until they went crazy with the ridiculousness and that's after they introduced a fully sentient robot and a transformation machine. Looking back on some of the ABC sitcoms that were on back in the day, I think I preferred the ones that aired on Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays were better like "Coach" and "Home Improvement." The TGIF lineup doesn't hold up. I know some of you will argue about "Full House" because that aired on Tuesdays, but make no mistake that it aired on Fridays as well before the move in time slots. I'm a big Home Improvement fan. It came as a fully formed show with no dropped concepts, disappearing main characters or recasting actors. It also was clever in having a show within a show and the studio audience being the same. I also liked Coach as a kid even though it really wasn't made for me. I didn't know anything about college football and in the last season when he was an NFL coach my NFL interest wasn't very high. Roseanne was another great ABC sitcom till it became a platform for Barr instead of a comedy for Barr. To me, these are situation comedies rather than just family sitcoms. TGIF are family sitcoms especially the Miller-Boyett Productions like Full House, Step by Step and Family Matters. So was Perfect Strangers, but I view that as a regular sitcom. The TGIF lineup, especially the Miller-Boyatt shows were cut from the same cloth on purpose. They looked the same so you go from 8-10 and not have any drastic switch in tone. Boy Meets World's first season fit in pretty well, but it got a dose of puberty in the 2nd season and why it actually can have such a lasting fan base. I will give Step by Step some credit, it was Brady Bunch in the 90s with the kids not getting along with each other, not getting along with the parents and that lasted. If Joey and Jesse were upset with each other by the end they'd be pals again, same with the kids.

So, what's the story with Original Mark? And Coach and Home Improvement still hold up. Coach does seem a bit antiquated with out the college football landscape has changed since the show debuted but I watched it within the past few years and it was still funny. Coach has more than held up. It's just too bad that there have only been 4 seasons released on DVD. The show did go downhill when he went to the NFL, but the show still holds up. "Homewreckers" (Luther and Hayden destroy Christine's apartment) is still one of the funniest episodes of a tv show.

All these TGIF shows are kind of awful, have aged badly and make me appreaciate my parents for having to be full grown adults watching that dreck with me and my sister. Most of them I never saw, because by the time they started airing I was in my mid teens. Seeing reruns years later they are all uniformly kind of crappy.

I definitely agree about Home Improvement. It never felt the need to gimmick itself the way that so many other shows did. I think it helped that Allen was a legit comedian and knew that it was up to him to carry the show at all times, too many other shows depended too much on supporting characters who would eventually become the stars of the show. And while Home Improvement did decline in quality once Thomas left the show, it was still head and shoulders above a lot of the other shows that ran as long.
Anyone ever remember the episode of Step By Step where JT and Rich go down to Mexico on Spring Break so they could eat burritos? Then they got robbed. That's when I knew the quality was long long gone.

Does Sabrina count as a TGIF show? I thought that was ok in its early seasons (wasnt Billy Gunn in one episode? I know Kevin Nash was).

Well, "Perfect Strangers" didn't deal with children or anything family-related, unless you want to talk about the characters of Larry and Balki, and their familial issues and how to deal with them, which was the point of the show's plot. However, you have the other ones from Miller-Boyett or even Bickley-Warren, then again, they were all the same company in the end, and they all seemed the same. Exterior shots of the house and locations the character were at in that moment, family issues and dealing with them, some kid gets in trouble. However, I did enjoy "Hangin' With Mr. Cooper" back in the day. "Boy Meets World" was actually the best one of the TGIF lineup, though I will say that I am aware that the show was produced by Michael Jacobs, just to make it clear that not all TGIF shows were produced by Miller-Boyett Productions.

But Bickley-Warren created Step by Step, Full House and Family Matters, but it was executively produced by Miller-Boyett from their start. I think the last few seasons of Perfect Strangers both Larry and Balki got married, had kids and moved to a house. It was weird. I liked Hangin' with Mr. Cooper as well. A lot of that had to do with Holly Robinson Peete. En Vogue sang the first season's theme song, but they've cut that in syndication.

I had a crush on Angela Watson but knew when Christine Lakin grew up she would be the looker. The daughter from My Two Dads was the oldest daughter in this show, if memory serves me well. I had a small crush on her back in the day, though the flame I carried for the Lubbock Babes (particularly Jamie Luner) was more intense. Of the Lubbock Babes I choose JoAnne Willete. I know they dressed her to look plain on the show but outside of Just the Ten of Us she was gorgeous. Funny thing about her being cast was that she was the oldest of the 4 actresses but played the youngest teen. Also, Bill Kirchenhauer and Deborah Harmon, who played her parents, are just 10 and 12 years older than her (Heather Langenkamp is one year younger than Willette). I guess that in order to have that many kids the two had to get a REALLY early start.

Just looking it up, they moved into a new house in the 7th season and their is only one baby and that's at the very end of the shortened last season, but Balki and Mary Anne are also expecting a baby.

All the TGIF shows had kick-ass theme songs, except (ironically) Boy Meets World. For example: The last Boy Meets World theme song, the only one with lyrics, is probably the laziest theme ever. It doesn't even rhyme. The female singer of the Step by Step theme also sang the Bob Saget era America's Funniest Home Videos.

That's when I knew the quality was long long gone. At less when someone left Home Improvement they had a story behind it to write them out which why I think the show holds up and doesn't come off nearly as badly written or cheesy like the other shows in that line up. Like nobody just all of sudden left without a trace. That what I liked about the whole plot of the show was there wasn't a time where they try to replace someone with a "look a like" anything.
