New year, new thread, right? Just need a witty subtitle.
Anyway, Thought it was time to make one as huge news has broke: This will be the last year Jeff Gordon competes for the Championship
Damn. I really thought he was gonna keep going until he reached 8 championships.

I was never big on NASCAR but this is a huge announcement. Anytime people think NASCAR Jeff is one of the names that pops up, even if you don't watch the sport, you know that Car anywhere.
Whatever he does next best of luck to him, Im sure NASCAR will be fine without him but definitely one of the biggest legends in the sport stepping down here. We'll see if 2015 is a storybook year or not.

I'm kind of curious if he's going to have more of a Shawn Michaels retirement where he actually retires and stays retired, or a Mark Martin retirement where the racing bug gets the better of him. As long as he doesn't keep coming back as an also-ran like the Labontes have done.
Also, Rolex 24 this weekend. I'm inexplicably giddy about seeing that Martini livery more and more lately. Glad they're making a big push back into motorsports.

While Formula E is really good, it runs too infrequently to fill my fix. Also, while I've grown out of favor with NASCAR in the past five years, it is a bit of a bummer knowing one of my childhood racing heroes will retire at the end of the season. I too wish Jeff nothing but the best.

Sorry, Junior. You're my go to guy in the top series (whatever the hell it's called). But this year, I'm rooting for Jeff to go out in style, ala Ric Flair.

He also stated that: "While it is still open to run a limited season, I currently have no plans to do so." And I'll go ahead and just say it, it's a political decision within Hendrick. They're basically shoving Jeff out the door to get Chase in the 24 in 2016, because Elliot's developmental deal expires at the end of the 2016 season, meaning if Chase isn't in a Cup car for Hendrick by then, he'll be a free agent. And they'll end up being in a bidding war with everyone else who'll be throwing blank checks at this kid, because Chase will be a star in NASCAR. So when it was announced at the end of the year that Kahne got a extension through 2016, the writing was on the wall that the only way Chase was getting in the Cup Season by 2016 was if Jeff was out of the 24...and that's what we got, but I truly don't believe it's as feel good as NASCAR wants us to believe it is.

I think it's a good time to get the Jeff Gordon in the 2016 Indianapolis 500 rumor mill starting. Because that would be awesome.

I'm honestly still surprised that they've hung onto Kasey Kahne because he really hasn't seemed that remarkable since coming to Hendrick. Then again, that 5 car has almost been cursed with invisibility since Terry Labonte retired. Even Kyle Busch really didn't make any waves until he got to Gibbs and people were ready to write him off.

Would be cool if Hendrick could get the #9 away from RPM for Chase.

Mark Martin did decent with the 5, but then they decided to throw him out the door and put Kahne in the car. Which even though Mark was getting up there, I thought it was a stupid move, as Kahne has done nothing to impress me so far.

I dunno, Jeff's wife has reportedly wanted him to retire for awhile, and supposedly it's something he's been mulling for a few years. And unless Rick Hendrick lost control of HM, there's no way they'd force Jeff out. Rick feels that Jeff built Hendrick Motorsports and not just because of his titles, but because he handpicked Jimmie Johnson as well. Plus if you think that the sponsors would be cool pushing Jeff out you'd be dead wrong. Also, what's left for him to do? Basically the only thing he hasn't done is win at Kentucky

I think if anything Jeff's back injury accelerated his retirement. Not quite an Edge level of retirement but you get the idea. That being said, even back in the 90s I remember him saying something like he wanted to be retired by 45 or he didn't want to be racing when he was 50. I think this was while Darrell Waltrip was puddering around in the Kmart car at the end of his career and you still had a few random old timers sticking it out like Dave Marcus, so it makes sense.

Plus if you think that the sponsors would be cool pushing Jeff out you'd be dead wrong. Also, what's left for him to do? Basically the only thing he hasn't done is win at Kentucky Sponsors have nothing to do with it, they sponsor the car, not the driver. Plus a lot of the sponsors that Jeff has this year don't have a standing relationship with the team or company, so it's not like they would make much of a scene of who is in the car. Plus you make a good case, but you could say the same thing about Peyton Manning when he was with the Colts, but what happened? Team know his career was winding down, he was making a lot of money and they had a sure fire talent ready to come in and send the franchise into the future. So what happened, Peyton got the boot. The man who had been super loyal to that team was kicked to the curb. Joe Montana got kicked out for Steve Young. To me this is no different. To keep Chase Elliott from going on the market after the 2016 season, he needed to be in a Hendrick car by the end of that season. Jeff's 24 was the only option they had, so that's exactly what ended up happening. They have the star of the future, and they won't have to pay Chase a fifth of what they pay Jeff now. It's that term we all love... It's what was "Best for Business".

And Larson wrecks Keslowski. Remind me again why everyone thought he was such a great driver?

Not even a points race into the season and Logano already forgot he hasn't done shit in Cup to be stepping up to anyone, let alone the defending Champion like he did. Hopefully someone puts him on his ass this season.
