Since we have a thread on the most justified heel turns I'd like to discuss the opposite end of the spectrum, face turns where there wasn't an actual turn by the person in question. What do I mean by that? Well we assume that in order to turn face, a heel has to proactively do something to justify their new stance. For example they might attack a bigger heel, save another face, or do something to reflect a more honest character. The key is that we can identify a moment where they made the turn, for example when Batista gave Trips the thumbs down and powerbombed the champion through the table. But occasionally we get face turns where there the person in question didn't actually do anything to turn face, they became faces just because. My example would be Randy Orton's face turn in 2004. Orton wins the World Title (cleanly, to his credit) from Chris Benoit, and the next night manages to retain the belt. Immediately afterwards his stablemates Triple H and Evolution come out seemingly to celebrate with him, but instead turn on him and beat him down. The next week Orton is presented as a top face despite being one of the bigger heels for the better part of a year up to that point. Orton hadn't really done anything to justify being presented in that new light. It seemed more to the fact that he was a face because Triple H was just the bigger heel. There was no single point where we saw Orton proactively change his morals, he was just suddenly a good guy because now he didn't like the other bad guys. So what other examples of a face turn, without an actual moment where they turn are there?

Daniel Bryan as part of Team Hell No didn't have a defined moment when he turned face, which is why it so great.
Sheamus in 2011, came out to challenge Mark Henry and somehow turned face.

Cannot for the life of me remember how Dudley Boyz turned face in 2000 but I think it was something to do with the fans liking them put people through tables. Which is just sadistic!

Sheamus was actually quite over during this period...and then came 18 seconds and the never-ending Del Rio feud.

Randy Orton's current face turn basically happened because he was a whiny entitled child who was jealous of Seth Rollins' success.

The Tyson Kidd/Dudebusters face turns.
All three's face turns Literally boiled down to "one week the announcers are saying bad things about them so they're EEEEEEEEEVIL, and the next week the announcers are saying good things about them so they're great guys."
You can't really GET more unjustified than that one.
Dishonorable mention goes to the Usos' and Zack Ryder face turns: The Usos' face turn started with the same "one week the announcers say they're evil, the next week the announcers say they're good guys" was partially tempered with the "Well, they do the Haka, so I GUESS they're nice guys now". Meanwhile, on paper Ryder's face turn was the same as these, but at least he did have the "yeah, the fans are supposed to GET that Ryder turned himself babyface with Z! True Long Island Story outside the WWE, so we don't have to turn him face in kayfabe" aspect.

Randy Orton is a total douchenozzle and we're supposed to cheer for him just because Triple H turned on him. damn near killed the guys career. it's a testament to Orton's skill that he waa able to eventually turn it around.

Every single time that Orton turns face.
Orton always ends up a face because the people who turn on him (or the people he turns on) are even bigger assholes than he is.
But he never stops being an asshole.

Shawn Michaels turning face against Sid. He brought in one bodyguard to cheat to win matches for him, turned on that one, he brought in Sid and had him cheat for him then tried to dismiss him publicly in the most prickish way he could when it backfired, only to be powerbombed to hell for it. The fans popped for Sid doing it, wanting Sid to be the face, but the WWF wanted none of that. It really was a weird situation, the WWF giving someone else Sid's face turn, they wanted Shawn as the babyface champion of the company as desperately as they do Reigns now and didn't let crowd reactions stop them despite the fact neither man is in any way sympathetic.

Cannot for the life of me remember how Dudley Boyz turned face in 2000 but I think it was something to do with the fans liking them put people through tables. Which is just sadistic! In an interview, Bubba said that basically they were getting cheered as heels because people loved ECW and they loved the table spots, and Vince hit on a 'genius' idea to get them booed; put women through tables, which was when/why the Mae Young angle happened. But cos it was the Attitude Era and morality was dead, it only got them more cheers, so eventually Vince cut his losses and made them woman-beating babyfaces. Brig bak da atiutde erra!

Steve Austin after the end of the Alliance.
He just kinda was the next day despite trying to kill the company the night before.

Indeed, and yet conversely, she was totally justified to turn heel on Cena for leading her on then acting embarrassed when she reciprocated and basically laughing at her behind her back. Then when she 'betrayed' him by ending the relationship he didn't take seriously cos he's John Cena, he called her a whore and dumped shit on her and her new boyfriend that actually seemed to care about her, moments after this picture was taken in fact. The WWE is one backwards-ass place.

We just needed a way to avoid John Cena losing clean, we don't want the fans losing faith in him. Treating a woman as a human being, losing matches to midgets, he'd have looked like the biggest dork in the world - VKM

I think Eddie just turned face again due to fan reaction. I think fans actually enjoyed his comedy heel tactics and didn't really want to boo him. I may be getting my timeline mixed up but perhaps his feud with John Cena and the Parking Lot Brawl on SmackDown for the US title also was part of the face turn too?
