I just could not bring myself to vote Labour. I'm almost glad to see them fall. Labour are paying the price for being light blue Tories. That approach will never work, because people will simply vote for actual Tories rather than imitators. The progressive spectrum has been alienated by this, and also by Nick Clegg, who quite simply looks to have utterly destroyed the Liberal Democrats. If Labour and the Lib Dems don't provide a social democratic/progressive alternative to the Tories, progressives just won't bother showing up at the elections, and the old-style Labour voters will look elsewhere, such as UKIP. I knew as soon as Ed Milliband was chosen as leader that he wasn't prime minister material. Even if his policies were strong, which they aren't (his "I'll cap tuitition fees at £6000!" policy pretty much summed him up), he doesn't look or sound like a prime minister, as vague as that sounds. Effectively Labour chose the wrong Milliband. His brother may have been a better choice. If we have five more years of the Tories, as bad as it will be, I don't think it's going to be the doom and gloom many fear. They won't be privatising the NHS, because that would be political suicide. I expect the assault on the poor and sick will continue, but that really began under Labour anyway, and I saw nothing to indicate Labour would curtail it if they formed the government. Labour will recover, as the Tories will stay true to form eventually and implode as they did back in the mid 90's, probably via in-fighting on the EU. But Labour will be doing it with a new leader, and hopefully with some actual progressive policies.

It's funny to me that Labour is still paying the price for Tony Blair going against the things their platform should have stood for and instead embracing conservative, Bush administration beliefs.

Labour lost Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath. Five years ago that was the seat of the then Prime Minister.

Somehow missed this, but the Broadland/Norwich North count got delayed after the fire alarms were set off - by steam from a tea urn.

So SNP has wiped Labour out of Scotland and The Tories are gonna win a majority of seats in England? I'm assuming that's what's happening.

The only hope Labour has is either UKIP pick up a lot of little seats down south or Labour basically just take the entire north. Unlikely in both ends and it looks like the UK for the next while is the Conservatives to keep. There would need to be almost a grass roots movement to beat the Conservatives in England now.

I was expecting the Tories to be the biggest parties but I thought Labour would hold and gain enough to be around 275 or so allowing a Lab/SNP Government or informal alliance. Gotta say as a yank who follows British politics fairly closely (I'm currently reading a biography of Tony Benn) I'm kinda surprised.
