Mesmur - S (2017)Funeral doom isn't a style I listen to too much but my friend John plays drums in this band so I bought it to support him. But unlike a lot of times when I buy things because I feel I "have" to I actually enjoyed this album. The songs are a little long and slow but that's funeral doom music. Some of the melodic guitar work is really, really good and the album sounds fantastic production-wise. Their first album was pretty good but they've outdone themselves on this one. 7.5/10

Machine Head - Catharsis (2018)The fans and critics had already turned on this album before it was released. Every new song that came out was getting more flack than the last one and the 1/10 and 2/10 reviews have been piling up the last few weeks. but a funny thing happened on the way to this album though: I was liking every song that came out more than the last. Maybe I just have really low expectations from Machine Head but I don't expect an incredible album from start to finish from them anyway. I'm happy with an album where I like half the songs. I've realized that with bands of this ilk the best thing to do is just turn your brain off and have fun for once. Yes, they did go with a sort of nu-metal direction on this album. Not as much as they did on 1999s 'the Burning Red' but enough that the only comprable music to this is "nu-metal". But if anything it's just "radio metal" versions of their last three albums, with some dumb lyrics. But f*** me when it's good it's so damn good. Opening track Volatile is dumb and stoopid fun. The title track and Kaleidoscope are just downright wicked songs. And Bastards is great as long as Robb Flynn isn't acappelling to it. After that the album gets somewhat forgettable but there's nothing overly offensive about it. If anything it's just too long. Maybe if five of the lesser songs weren't included this album would be getting a lot better press. If you're going to have fifteen songs on an album that clocks in at seventy-five minutes they better be damn good songs. Some of them are not. They're nothing I don't want to hear again but they're nothing special. I think true kvlt metal fans always just like to shit on Machine Head. They shat on Bloodstones & Diamonds. They shat on Unto the Locust. And some even shat on the Blackening. This is a different album from those but it's still damn fun and I REALLY like it. To quote the first lyric of the album: f*** the world! 8/10 TWO SONGS FROM THIS ALBUM, because I don't know which one I like better:
