The Melvins Lite - Freak Puke (2012)This is a Melvins album that I've held off on for quite some time. I remember listening to it online when it first came out and I thought it was pretty good. Then a year or so later I listened to it again when I was doing research on the Melvins entire discography and I didn't like it at all. So how was listen number three? Well first let me give some quick background on the album. The Melvins have always been the core members of Buzz Osbourne and Dale Crover with a revolving cast of bass players. It's even become a joke amongst the band and their fans. So on this album they were joined by former Mr. Bungle bassist Trevor Dunn, who also played bass in one of Buzz's other bands Fantomas as well as with a plethora of experimental jazz artists. But to change it up here they decided to go with an acoustic stand-up bass on a lot of the songs. They also toned down the intensity of the music and went a little jazzier, thus the moniker "Melvins Lite". It's a really hard album for me to listen to. Firstly: I hate experimental spastic jazz music. So when a song like Inner Ear Rupture happens really early in the album I'm instantly turned right off. There's other experimental bass sounds like scraping and moaning that I just can't stand throughout the album. Thankfully they're mostly just in the intros of songs but I just don't like hearing it. And secondly Buzz's guitar sounds like the treble is turned way up to sound like it's being played through a telephone. And the lack of an electric bass in most of the songs leaves very little low-end in the music. So it just sounds very hollow and empty. The songs are the songs. There's nothing that rivals their heyday but I don't expect that. If it at least sounded better then maybe I'd be more forgiving to this album. Some of the songs are okay but this is probably one of the Melvins worst albums. I have it now because I do love the band and want to support them but this isn't something I plan on listening to again for quite some time. 3/10

Dead Congregation - Promulgation of the Fall (2014)This is the kind of music that really would have excited me a lot more four or five years ago. But I've heard so much now that it doesn't really do anything for me. I remember all my metal friends were salivating for this album in 2014 and I checked a song or two out then and thought it was really cool. So I put it on my Amazon "to buy" list and then I forgot about it. A few days ago I saw it was heavily marked down and I was looking to pad an order to get free shipping (because that always makes sense; order another ten dollar album to save seven dollars on shipping) so I decided to give it a go. It's really damn good death metal that wears its Immolation worshipping patch proudly on its sleeve. But these days I'm into death metal that's murkier and grimier. Three years ago I'd have probably given it a 9.5/10 but after going so much deeper into the bowels of death metal the best I can do is an 7.5/10, which still isn't bad at all. It's damn fine stuff. 7.5/10

Baroness - Yellow & Green (2012)Baroness are a band I've always wanted to like but I've never bothered to get around to them. I decided to finally take the plunge with this album because I really have liked the songs Take My Bones Away and March to the Sea for years. But for some reason when I listed to this album I couldn't stop laughing to myself. I couldn't take them seriously. I think it's because some of my friends who listen to them take their music SO SERIOUSLY. I mean, it's good. There are a few damn good to great songs. Some that I hadn't even heard before. But all I could visualize while I was listening was lumberjacks in massive flannel shirts getting all emotional. I also got turned off a bit when I was reading some of their bios and I heard the genre "progressive metal" mentioned a few times. I hate progressive metal. But this is nothing like Rush or Dream Theatre so I don't know where that tag comes from. It's sludgy metal with emotional undertones. It's burley man emo. The first disc (Yellow) is the much better of the two. By time I got around to the second disc (Green) I was a little bored. And it pissed me off too that I even had to change the discs, as both would fit on one CD just fine. I hate the artwork too. But I hate all of John Baizley's artwork, even on albums I've loved. It's always the same shit. I do appreciate their laser focus on color themes for each album though. But it was decent and now I can say I've heard more than three Baroness songs. I may or I may not bother with some of their other albums but at least I'll know that I should at least enjoy them. 7/10

With Baroness something curious happened, without knowing anything of his music, I approached one of the stages of a music festival to see them and my first impression was "this is great" as the songs went on I was very hooked, but in the middle of the show my group of friends wanted to go to another stage to watch Suicidal Tendencies, I went with them and then at home I started to listen to their discography and it's a great band, I regret not having been able to see the whole show.

One of the best attacks on the music biz ever IMO.
