I know there's a whole "Are they Tr00 metal!?" thing on Deftones, but holy hell that new album is awesome. It's easily my album of the year at this point. After seeing the Fantano review, I was expecting it to be awful. Not sure what the hell that dude listened to. I loved it

He's usually bang on but he's been known to have some controversial takes.

I'm surprised there's anyone who would argue The Deftones aren't metal. Have they not heard "Hexagram"?
Anyways, the new album slaps.

I don't really think of them as a metal band myself but I don't think that's a bad thing. Once upon a time they were a nu-metal band but it's so long ago it feels inaccurate to label them that way.

I honestly think Deftones are one of the few bands from their era that have aged the best.
Their new album is amazing.

Been digging this track as of late.
Supergroup consisting of Max Cavelera, Greg Puciato, Troy Sanders and Ben Koller.
Their first album is pretty good. Might have to dust it off, as its been awhile since I've heard it.
Also gotta check out Greg Puciato's other work. I've been missing out.....

When I saw them on the tour for Gore the new stuff was so awesome (even the stuff from Gore) and when they finished the set with some older stuff from Adrenaline it was so sad that I had to leave.

This may sound really stupid, but is there a site that will give you some kind of clue as to whether or not a particular Black Metal band is full of nazis or not? There are a couple of bands I've really gotten into only to find out that they're assholes.

There are a couple of bands I've really gotten into only to find out that they're assholes. Sadly no. There are definitely sites out there but they aren't very reliable and frequently make accusations directed at bands who aren't Nazis at all. It's often for things as simple as distributors in some areas selling a band's CDs while also selling Nazi band cds (e.g. Nachtmystium) or dumb ass edgelord comments they made when they were teenagers (e.g. Darktrhone). The only way you can really tell is reading lyrics, reading interviews and training yourself to be very good at recognizing dog whistles. It also depends on whether you're counting bands whose members may hold such viewpoints that just aren't expressed anywhere in their music (e.g. Burzum). Checking out the music festivals the bands play might sometimes help but even that can be a dead end, like when a few decidely not-Nazi bands played on a bill that the Booker decided to book Graveland at as a secret headliner without telling anybody. Then you've got the anonymous bands like Deathspell Omega where maybe they might have a session vocalist whose a Nazi but the band themselves ostensibly aren't based on their lyrics/interviews but for some the possible association is bad enough. It's really not something you can do without a lot of research. Hope this helps.

Since we're talking Killer Be Killed: Song that sold me on them when I heard it on the MetalSucks podcast back in the good old days. Crazy to think any band looked at Greg and said "you know what? Be the clean vocalist". But then when your company is Max Cavalera and Troy Sanders it kinda makes sense.

Former commissioned Antichrist Kramer artwork, but they performed at Maryland Deathfest and don't seem to have any real political bent. Latter has members who have performed in highly questionable projects but seem to insist they have no agenda. Why they gotta make me even question this.

A lot of the best DEP songs have no screaming at all.

I agree the guy is a fantastic vocalist all around, but the cleans in DEP, to me, largely sound like something he doesn't particularly want to be doing. Even on a track like "Setting Fire To Sleeping Giants", they sound sarcastic, like the band is telling their metalcore ilk "we're even better at this style we don't like than you. Now listen to this other song where we play at 300 BPM." Maybe it's because I largely checked out after Miss Machine and only heard Greg doing insanely heavy guest spots on Suicide Silence, Every Time I Die, and A Static Lullaby records, but I feel like he actually kinda liked metalcore and the rest of the band was like nah.

Yeah you should probably go back to those later records because he sings clean a LOT on their stuff. And it's mostly his idea.

There are a couple of bands I've really gotten into only to find out that they're assholes. The Metal-Archives is pretty good for letting you know but you really can never be 100% until you ask around about a specific band. I found out the hard way earlier this year when I bought a Nyogthaeblisz shirt off eBay then a friend on Facebook told me. I was lucky able to cancel it.

On that note, on the plus side there's relatively few truly prominent bands with Nazi ideologies. If they get advertised in mainstream publications they're a safe bet about 95% of the time. And the other 5% it's either not in their music or they're VERY good at hiding it.

Pleasantly surprised by that new Rob Zombie song. I admittedly haven't paid much attention to him all that much since Educated Horses, but this song is giving me some White Zombie/Hellbilly Deluxe vibes. I'm anxious to hear the new album.
