I'm gonna give Hulkster benefit of doubt as he was pretty depressed then and as such you can say things you don't really mean. "It's very hard to live up to an image" (Elvis) Depression doesn't make you a racist. Depression may help an already racist say racist things out loud, depression may cause an already racist to literally say "I'm a racist" out loud, but depression or a bad day doesn't make you racist out of the blue if you're not racist Depression doesn't make you racist but it certainly will make you say things you don't really mean. Or at the least, you will exaggerate them. I call my wife some really hurtful things before I started treating my depression.

I think this line of thinking applies here. Quite frankly some of the reactions in this thread have made me disappointed. people saying that Hogan should be totally black balled and WWE should never mention him and edit him out EVER AGAIN NO MATTER WHAT is a sad sorry state of affairs. Hogan is no rolf Harris. There is no record of him ever using race to 'hold someone down' he has worked with people all over the world from all walks of life. He has been photographed with all sorts of fans etc. This doesn't excuse his actions. However he has publicly apologised, and after being totally humiliated and ridiculed and fully held at accountable for his actions, loss of his job, loss of career and huge stain on his reputation, people on here want to refuse him any chance of rehabilitation or recrimination? No matter what, in the future any situation with a black person involving Hulk Hogan, positive, negative, or simply word association is going to be met with sly jabs, cynicism and barely concealed hate. And the mods here turn a blind eye to it. I'm sorry, this is not the Ben out situation. If you now feel sick and can't ever bring yourself to watch a Hogan match again, that's up to you. But by continuing to hold a grudge, you are portraying hate in a similar fashion. Let me be honest and I am totally serious here, it's actually a good thing this has happened. It reinforces in our society that this type of mindset is outdated and wrong. But more importantly, it is possibly the only thing that would bring about a true change and repentance from Hogan himself. In the long run, this is the best thing to happen to him in terms of his own personal growth as a human being. I hope Hogan is able to show that you're never to old to change. This could become quite a powerful message if he does speeches later on about how he had no problem with black people on the surface, they never got in his way and he got on with them in a working relationship fine. But deep down it was when they came close to his family when his true feelings came to the surface. There was a limit for him, but because he was able to hide it well the issue never needed addressing. No he's forced to deal with it and it's ultimately made him a better person inside. imagine him saying he took some time out to examine his past and find out what the triggers were from his childhood that made him react that way. Truly powerful stuff from an actual legend. But no, some people feel it is more important to hold on to the hate, that it's disrespectful to the past if you forgive Hogan. I understand that it may seem like that, but do you ever realise that the some of the biggest stories and insights about the behaviour and mentality of racists, alcoholics etc come from former offenders? Has anyone here even seen American History X, even though Hogan was nowhere near that level? I am really disappointed in this place. Oh man, and then you got the guy here claiming everyone uses the word and he's black so what's the problem, black n, white n, blah blah blah same old argument that goes on and on, kids who grew up hearing it in rap music without understanding why Black people started using the word in the first place. You wanna go back 60 years and see a white guy try and use the word because 'it's just a word, no word has power etc,'.Man I better not get into the social side of things with that guy. He just doesn't understand. At the very least, accept it is a swearword and one with a lot of stigma and history behind it. Hogan man, you brought a lot of entertainment and prestige to the industry. But you messed up, and in the process it exposed a hidden ugly side. Now you really gotta go through the Dungeon of Doom and find out if it's hot or not. Now you gonna get dry humped by the Yeti Hogan. Only time will tell if you will be the third man who betrays WCW. Gotta stop myself there, I'm losing track Hogan may have apologised, but then immediately whined straight after how a black man was able to use the word at a racism debate but can't understand why a white man can't use the word as a hate-filled attack. He doesn't think there's anything wrong with the word, he doesn't think he did anything wrong, his apology meant shit. That's people's main problem, not that he held those racist feelings in 2008 "during the worst time of his life which magically made him racist", but his complete failure to redeem himself. Also, no one here is being as dramatic as you said they are. No-one is comparing him to Benoit, what Benoit did is much worse. I'm against mind-wiping him for the same reason I'm against mind-wiping Benoit, he was part of history. But should WWE work with him until he's able to actually redeem himself? No. Will they work with him when everyone's forgot about it? Yes. We all know this isn't a permanent thing, anyway, it never is with WWE. Add on to that, it's not like Hogan's been a nice guy all his life and suddenly had this outburst. Hogan's always been a POS, a pathological liar who's intentionally hurt the careers of others when there was no need. I actually heard one person say what Hogan did was worse than the Benoit situation because it "killed his childhood"

I actually heard one person say what Hogan did was worse than the Benoit situation because it "killed his childhood" While extremely hyperbolic, I can understand where they are coming from. They obviously had a stronger emotional connection to Hogan than they did with Benoit, so it stands to reason finding out your childhood hero isn't the paragon of virtue you always believed would cut deeper than a wrestler you were a fan of as an adult turns out to be a murderer. Personally, it bothered me more finding out Bret Hart was a self-centred, womanising prick than the Benoit situation ever did. That's not to downplay the appalling nature of Benoit's crime, it's just to say that to me Bret was a hero in my formative years, and Benoit was just a guy who wrestled well on a TV show I watched.

Wow. A man brutally murders his son and wife, and it bothered you less than finding out your favourite wrestler as a kid, whom you've never met, is self-centred? Sounds like you and your hero are much alike.

I have been at some remarkably low points in my life and had people who were black do some very hurtful things, but somehow I managed to, at the very bottom, find ways to complain about them that didn't involve racial slurs. Being at a low point can make you say things you don't mean, but it can't give you certain hateful attitudes. Just make them come to the surface more easily, because you're too hurt to bother filtering.

"Do you have a source for that Elvis story?"
From his bodyguards , the "Elvis , what happened ?" book
Also this article :
"There were good times and, later on, some bad times when the dark side of Elvis came to the fore. In 1975 he insulted Kathy and the Sweet Inspirations on-stage. All except Myrna Smith walked off in protest. This was the final straw in a series of incidents when Elvis insulted Kathy both off-stage and on-stage during introductions"
We weren't there so we have no idea how E was behind scenes (what he said in the limo after the show) but they were.....some fans can't accept that E wasn't a saint.

Sounds like you and your hero are much alike. Wayyyyy to miss the point there. I was making a statement about how emotional attachments skew otherwise incomparable events, situations, and experiences. What Chris Benoit did was, of course, magnitudes worse than anything Bret Hart did... but didn't affect me beyond a base empathic level because I had no emotional attachment to either of the victims, nor to Benoit himself. On average 1,800 people are murdered around the world every single day, do they invalidate your feelings of disappointment over comparatively trivial things?

Nope. I think you are the one missing the point. You were the one who compared the two issues, and your disappointment levels. Now you seem to be backpedaling. Just because you had "emotional attatchment" to a "hero" makes it more real to you than the fact that a perosn and child were bruatlly murdered? Dont try straw man arguments to validate your lack of empathy for people.

Just because you had "emotional attatchment" to a "hero" makes it more real to you than the fact that a perosn and child were bruatlly murdered? Dont try straw man arguments to validate your lack of empathy for people. Your point was clear - I'm a self-centred jerk who is apathetic to the suffering of others because I had a stronger reaction to the acts of an adulterer than I did the acts of a murderer. Put the two issues on a level playing field and you'd be right, but my entire point is they weren't on a level playing field. I wasn't comparing the issues directly, just how the way you regard someone can affect the way people react to things. In this thread people have flat out said they don't care if Hogan's racist they'll always worship him as a hero, while others have expressed how much he has disappointed them. There are people who openly admit to overlooking what Benoit did because he was a hero to them. For me, Bret disappointed me because my childhood adoration for him doesn't overrule my sense of right and wrong. With Benoit, I had no strong feelings about him one way or the other, so when he killed Nancy and Daniel I was sad for them, but had no real change in my feelings for Benoit. He didn't have a pedestal to fall from, and had he lived I might have felt more anger or revulsion, but I don't see any sense in holding onto negative emotions for the dead. It's not healthy. Now, if you think I lack empathy for not feeling a deep sorrow for every unjust death in this world, go right ahead. I don't need to validate it, I just offer one perspective. I do feel sorry for any unjustly-ended life, but being able to move on with my day doesn't equal a lack of empathy.

And when's the last time Hulk Hogan said something that was true? He's going to pick up on this soon and really abuse it. Hulk: "I am NOT awesome and you should NOT give me millions of dollars"
