i THINK that the boyfriend tried to talk to her before the salty rant. But this is all unrelated. The thing that sparked the sexism is because she was sleeping with journalists and as it turned out, she actually wasn't. It's like you're saying the entire movement was founded on intellectual dishonesty or something!

There's evidence to the controversy but that's irrelevant. Grayson did have a friendship with her that has been proven, and while it wasn't a review she did get positive coverage.

and as it turned out, she actually wasn't. It's like you're saying the entire movement was founded on intellectual dishonesty or something! The whole movement seems to have a "LALALALA we're not listening because it doesn't line up witu our industry viewpoint!" undercurrent to it. It's not hard to side with Quinn once one digs into everything that happened between her and her ex. And the fact that her alleged sleeping around is such a major bone with people, in light of all of the other chaos that's occurred in GG's wake, exposes an ugly double standard about how women in society are damned if they do and damned if they don't when it comes to sexual relationships, and it certainly doesn't warrant everything she was put through.

I wouldn't call that a "smear" so much as a typical report on a fringe group that most networks would run. And considering that GamerGaters have a tendency to spam-click dislike buttons on anything that portrays them in a less-than-positive light, it's not exactly a wide public condemnation against a long respected news company.
It was a smear, they kept tying GG into the harassment of Quinn and Srakeesian when there has still been no evidence to this day that anyone involved with them did it.
As for your point, do you know that for sure? Is there really any proof they did with ABC's video? Because I should mention ABC got in a little hot water with people when they inexplicitly started deleting people's comments.
A smear implies that they set out solely to make them look bad, so the same question bout proof could really be asked of you as well. In actually, it was far more likely to be lazy reporting, taking what was already on the internet and running with it (national news outlets are pretty notorious for being lazy like that when it comes to the filler stories), because they have to fill news time every day and that can be difficult in a non-election year. And when you get down to it, the newsrom is more like a hive of bees than a machine, everyone is pretty much running around down all sorts of unrelated things, consumign and regurgitating until they have a product at the end.

So, for what I understand, this started with Zoe Quinn's ex going online and saying that she supposedly slept with reviewers to get her games promoted and/or get good reviews from them. Since that narrative isn't all that interesting, it then changed into fighting for ethics in gaming journalism in one side and the other side talking about gaming culture is sexist and that they want change. When neither side saw success on their own, everyone went on business for themselves and throwing caution for the win, labelling those who don't agree with them as part of the other side. How accurate is this description?

How accurate is this description? That is a pretty apt description of it, only with more doxxing and complaints about cultural marxism, with a dash of MRA thrown in. If the topic was any more important, that guy would have been rightfully ignored. But because this one little niche could be exploited by crazy people on both sides, it became the equivalent of two chimps having a poop fight. Like many hve said, neither side looks good the backlash against anyone who looks at games any deeper than "can I stab it for more health" really undermines the notion that it's just about reviews, and the doxxing on both sides make people look like petulant children. And everyone deeply involved really has an extremely overinflated sense of their own importance, because both biased reviews and catering to the lowest common demoninator are thigns that will be around forever.

I was a part of a relatively large Gamergate group on Facebook (didn't do that much, just occasionally tweeted stuff and got involved in random shit I don't remember), and some woman threatened to Dox a bunch of us, including me. Everyone freaked out, and if I recall the list of names was posted somewhere. Haven't heard much about it since then, not too involved with #GG anymore.

Firstly, I'm all for anything that annoys the kind of people who took part in this movement. Especially Anita Sarkeesian, I think every game should feature her face plastered all over the box art and force you to watch an episode of Tropes vs Women in between each level.

Now I have to meet Anita in the Dungeon of Dudebro and help her decipher the ancient tablet that unlocks practical looking armor for my female mage, something that doesn't expose her midriff! I'd play it.

But because this one little niche could be exploited by crazy people on both sides, it became the equivalent of two chimps having a poop fight. Basically. I follow and consistently RT several prominent anti-GG people but I've blocked my equal share of anti-GG people as well. Both sides have nutcases really. As I've mentioned earlier in the thread I've been dogpiled and harassed by numerous people who identify as pro-GG, not even for saying I'm against it. I was harassed for being transgender and identifying as otherkin. I know a ton of people don't get otherkin and that's ok but to call me horrible slurs and rounding up their buddies to harass me even more for it is something else entirely. I've had to resort to using the GGAutoBlocker to try to cut all that crap down.

The hatred she received is pretty much the only reason why Anita Sarkeesian has any relevance today. Her detractors really have no one to blame but themselves for her rise to prominence.
And I don't even agree with her on a bunch of her views on feminism (see: Mad Max Fury Road). But people are more interested in ad hominem attacks than addressing her arguments.

You should have leveled up enough to gain access to the Social Justice Paladin class. It has a lot better stats than Social Justice Warrior and provides passive resistance against trilby-elemental damage.
