When I was at school, my biggest concern was it came to showers wasn't being naked, but rather all the damn foot infections I used to get from the wet floors. Those damn swimming classes they forced us to have made the problem even worse. Eventually I had enough and said "screw this shit" and got a doctor's note. My feet have been fine ever since.

I never used the showers in high school. I'd rather just be stanky for a few minutes and shower in private at home.

I can understand high school aged kids feeling uncomfortable. They are immature kids for the most part, they have no grasp of how these issues affect people but that makes me question the school. Is the school doing anything to educate or promote understanding or are they trying to force it to work (if they are even going to allow it)? This lady deserves to be treated for the lady she is but there needs to be some sort of work done with this class (and let's face it, future classes as well) to help them understand what is actually going on. That's how I see it. I realize this is a new and foreign thing for many people, younger kids included, but it's still imperative that more are educated on the nuances of this issue. I'm with the student in question all the way, and whatever it takes for her and any other transgendered person to feel safe in said school or any other similar instinces needs to be implemented.

Yep because all men/jocks are rapists. What about the girls whom might be uncomfortable showering/undressing in front of someone who still has a penis? At no point was this implied Okay then feel free to explain what this means then. Btw I'd like to take this time and say that no where in the article say that the school was going to make her shower with the boys. If you can find where it say that in the article then feel free to point it out.

The other Like so many issues, im sure there are reasonable people on both sides, but wether they can cut through the hardliners and fanatics, and stop this from becoming an unproductive shouting match remains to be seen.

I always showered mainly because id smell like a ballsack dragged through bleach all day if i didnt.
this story is a tough one. Everybody has a legitimate reeason for how/why they feel the way they do.

I feel like the simplest resolution - a separate shower for transgender people - would also be the one that caused the most uproar from both sides of the debate, so I can't lie, I have no idea what the proper solution is.
But as an aside, a lot of you didn't shower after gym class in high school? Y'all nasty.

There was literally no time to shower after gym class. We were lucky if we got 3 minutes to change back into regular clothes before the bell rang to get to the next class.
Only reasonable time you'd get to shower would be last period of the day and at that rate, you might as well just smell for a few minutes on the drive/walk home and shower in private.
Locker room showers were mainly used by athletes after practices/games/meets/whathaveyou and the same thing applies then: why shower in public when you can get home in a few minutes and shower in private?

I never smelled after PE, because I basically didn't do anything. I was a master of standing still and letting other people hit the ball/throw the ball/catch the ball etc....

But as an aside, a lot of you didn't shower after gym class in high school? Y'all nasty. Person was offered private restroom apparently, refused. And yeah, 5 minutes was nowhere near enough time to run in from the football field, shower, and change back. Luckily, it was the last period of the day for me.

I know what side I fall on this. All I know is, I don't think I ever want to step foot in the greater St. Louis area in my lifetime.

To be honest while I am sympathetic to transgender issues generally I also totally understand the kids side of this
Plus the student in question has been offered private facilities and is refusing them so she doesn't seem to be willing to take anyone else's opinion into consideration

I never used the showers in high school. I'd rather just be stanky for a few minutes and shower in private at home. Real shit, haha. I refused to take showers at school, I was way too self conscious about my body. I could probably do it now with no real issue but back when I was 14 and ridiculously shy? Nah, it wasn't happening.

I was a master of standing still and letting other people hit the ball/throw the ball/catch the ball etc.... *See a dodgeball heading in general direction, lightly sticks out arm so ball will hit it* "Well guys, I'm out. Sorry, I did my best." I had to bust out that one a few times too.

It's a culture war and it's not surprising that this issue would become one. I slip-up and use the wrong pronouns sometimes out of habit, but I am supportive of the community.
