Alex Gordon has declined his $12.5 million player option for the 2016 season. I know Alex Gordon has come up big in the post season but his regular season offensive numbers don't exactly scream big pay day.

I did a double take as well. Whats more amazing is that Boog Powell is no relation to the Boog Powell that played for the Orioles years ago.

Mets did the right thing and gave Daniel Murphy a qualifying offer.
If he accepts, he'd be the first player to ever do so, but the Mets would then get a 2.5 WAR second baseman/fan-loved playoff hero who can fill in for David Wright at 3B on a one year deal. That's not a terrible outcome.
More likely, he declines, the Mets replace him with Dilson Herrera (who has wonderful minor league stats and is still really young), and the Mets recoup a solid compensation draft pick.
We all love ya, Murph, but this was the right thing to do.

Mets also now reported as looking at Parra, Fowler, and Span as possible free agent OF pickups, likely to pair with Lagares and to continue having a rotation of 4-5 guys who can start in the outfield.
Immediately cue some Mets fans petulantly whining about the Wilpons being cheap because they're not immediately offering Cespedes an 8 year contract. Like, good God, there are so many good reasons to hate the Wilpons, why do so many fans resort to stupid ones?

If reports are correct, the Pirates won the bidding rights to Korean 1B Byung-Ho Park.
Update: Welp, scratch that. New reports say they didn't. The winning team had yet to be revealed.
Update 2: Jon Heyman reporting that the Twins won the bidding.

Yeah, Span worries me because of the injuries he had last year, but he didn't get a qualifying offer and will most likely come cheaper than projected this time last year. He's at least worth looking into, and word seems to be that he's the top target for the Mets out of those three...for whatever that's worth.

Per Zach Klein of WSB-ABC in Atlanta, former Braves standout Tommy Hanson is in a coma at a local Atlanta hospital. No other details. Hanson pitched in the Giants farm system this year and just had elected free agency.

That's terrifying news about Hanson. Really hope there's good news to come out of this, whatever triggered it. On a lighter note, great write up by Jose Bautista on the subject of bat flips...well, more than that, but you get the point. "Are You Flipping Kidding Me?"

"If you think that makes me a jerk, that’s fine." Ok, well, as long as you're ok with it ... jerk. This article makes me think even less than him. Not ONCE does he acknowledge the true incident of the crime. He gazed right at the pitcher and then flipped it. He didn't celebrate it. He looked right at the pitcher with an "eff you, I'm better" and flipped it. He didn't just flip a bat. He looked the man down. Straight up thug. Instead of "owning it," he turns it into a Dusty Rhodes speech. Read that article. Such an egomaniac. Comparing that scene to Carlton Fisk? Geezus. Makes me wanna puke. Not even in the same league. (Ahem, one of them is bush league.) I understand if he just says "emotions got the best of me." That was his initial claim. Except again, he didn't acknowledge that he eyeballed the pitcher before the arrogant flip. Now, he's wallowing in ego and practically saying "get on my back. Who's with me? #ThugLife" Celebrate? Yes. Middle finger to the game with your antics? Go to the NBA, ya prick.

Yes. Middle finger to the game with your antics? Go to the NBA, ya prick. I'm totally fine with Jose Bautista exercising his right to flip his bat. When it happened in game five of the ALDS, I didn't even bat an eyelash. Hell, I root for a team that employs David Ortiz and nobody in baseball history has showboated more during and after a home run than Big Papi. But just as fine as I am with Bautista tossing his bat, I'm just as fine with Sam Dyson putting a fastball in his ribs the next time they square off. If and when that happens, I won't caterwaul about the integrity of the game or playing baseball the right way. But as an aside, I wholeheartedly agree with you that Bautista's op-ed does him no favors and makes him look like a massive primadonna. A home run in the 7th inning of a tie game in the Divisional Series is miles different than an extra innings home run to force a seventh game in the World Series or a home run that literally wins the World Series.
