It's that time of year again. In a few short days, the academy will start nominating for all the awards. And so, just like years prior, here is a list of 20 movies (and a spot for others) that have been getting a lot of buzz for the Best Picture spot. Last year, many thought that Gone Girl would be a shoe-in, a few thought Whiplash would be in the group, and the one with the most votes, Birdman, won the big one. How will we fare this time around?
My predictions: The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Carol, Inside Out, Mad Max, The Martian, The Revenant, Room and Spotlight get the nods, and Spotlight walks away with the Oscar.

Given who makes up the Academy, I can't imagine Fury Road or Creed getting a nomination.
Black Mass, Brooklyn, Carol, Joy, Inside Out (since they're willing to give an animated movie a pity nomination now), Martian, Room, Spotlight, Compton, Trumbo

I have not been watching movies for over two years, there has not been a single movie that I have any intrest in watching. The Oscars are always the same and always nominate the same type of movie.
A movie about a gay person A movie about a disabled person A movie about a person isolated from the rest of the world A cute animated movie A violent movie that has a decent story A movie based on real events A movie that is based on current events
Movies like Star Wars and Mad Max have little chance in getting the nomination, even if they are the best movies out this year. The Oscars may give them the award for best sound or effects.

No Nation, Spotlight and the one I'm really pulling for in Inside Out are locks, and all the buzz I've heard about Room, Martian and Carol makes me think they'll get nods.
I can see Force Awakens getting consideration, but even though Fury Road is pretty subversive, I think it's too crude on the surface for the Academy.

It's been a little tougher to call lately, since the number of nominees can fluctuate anywhere from five to ten. That said, these seem like the sure things right now:
Spotlight Room Carol The Martian
The rest are still kinda up in the air. The Big Short seems to have come out of nowhere to be a contender, and I'd say The Revenant has a good shot too. Inside Out is still a toss-up IMO, and a film like Mad Max hardly ever gets nominated, but it's being placed on year-end lists and nominated for awards that action films hardly ever get placed on, so there's definitely a possibility that it gets in.

This is the equivalent of me going in the My Little Pony thread and complaining about how there are so many bright colors of Ponies, but where are all the brown polka-dotted ones and how come there are no mules, only actual horses even though I haven't seen a show since I first tried it out. (Yeah. There is a reason I don't post in a thread I don't know anything about that isn't intended for me as a target audience member. I would only bring it down.) I pushed hard for Room and Spotlight during both world premieres, so even though they may not be my number one films this year, either one winning will make me a happy camper since they aren't your typical frontrunners.

No, you are way off. You see the Oscars were a great award show. When a movie won best picture, I would often see the movie and enjoyed it. Sure, there were a few movies that won best picture that I hated like Shakespeare in Love and Chicago, but most of them are good movies. Rocky is my favorite movie of all time and it won best picture. Last year they shocked me for giving the award to Birdman, I thought Boyhood was going to win, but really wanted Birdman. I thought Birdman had no chance in winning the award due to the fact that it did not have it had none of the qualities that I listed above. I know you think that since I do not watch new movies, I will not watch the Oscars. But, once again you are way off. I always watch the award show. So to me, I can have more own personal opinion. If a movie wins the best picture award and to me it looks interesting, I will watch the movie, just like I have done for the last three years. I let other people watch new movies for me, when they tell me a certain movie is good, I will rent it. The Oscars have disappointed me before with their nominations, but like last year, I sometimes get surprise by the winner. Movies that will get nominated are Room, Spotlight, The Reverent, Carol, Inside Out, The Martian, The Big Short, 99 Homes and maybe Youth, but if that doesn't get a nomination, Jane Fonda will get nominated best actress. Yes, I didn't watch any of the movies, but I know what they are about and also I read blogs about them from critics.

So I'll just nod, block, and move along. In fairness, I probably misunderstood something. But just clarifying with the above quotes. Sorry to derail the thread. I hope the movies turn out the way people want them to.

Brooklyn Spotlight Room Carol Mad Max Fury Road The Martian
My guesses. I can safely say though that I don't dislike anything as much as I did last year with American Sniper, Theory of Everything and Imitation Game. Straight Outta Compton has a pretty bad second half and would be a weak ass nom, Trumbo was a standard bearer Hollywood biopic and I haven't seen The Danish Girl yet but I haven't heard good things. Other than that...Spotlight, Carol, Mad Max, Room, Inside Out, Beasts of No Nation, Brooklyn, Hateful 8, Steve Jobs, Creed, The Big Short, The Martian and Bridge of Spies are all pretty good to some degree of excellent. I'll know further on Revenant in about 12 days or so.
I wish Sicario, Ex Machina, It Follows, Tangerine and Duke of Burgundy would get some more pub but what can ya do

I like Star Wars and Mad Max but those movies are NOT best picture quality to me.
Especially Mad Max which I feel is really overrated even though I love it.

The Academy has payed slightly more attention to box office (not too much, since you still have Best Picture noms like The Hurt Locker, which is great but still), so I don't think Fury Road's odds are hopeless.
Compton did start to peter out a little towards the end, but that was because they tried to cram so much into it. The NWA story was excellent, but wait, we gotta get the first meetings with Snoop and Tupac in there.
And yeah, American Sniper was hella cornball. Cooper wasn't bad performance wish but like I said, if Hank Hill ever tried to write his own screenplay, that's what it'd look like.

I was wondering about the 30 minute detour about the history of propane in the movie.... but yeah I don't see Mad Max or Star Wars being nominated... because those aren't the type of movies that get nominated by the Academy.

It's not about box office draw, it's the fact that the Academy is, for the most part, made of up stuffy old men who don't like pure action movies.

As much as I loved force awakens (and diehard star wars fan), it a slim chance it gets nominated. Fury Road was also great but even less likely.
