Honestly, I think Bill in the movie has it backwards.
Clark Kent is who he is, except playing up the weakness to hide his identity. But Superman is how he views humanity, or, rather, what he views humanity's potential to be. Not flying and punching space whales, sure, but as creatures who are concerned for how others are treated and who believe in the potential of anyone, no matter where they start out from, to become a better person.

Personally I've always been of the mind that Clark Kent and Superman are masks for Kal El.

I loved this shit when I saw it as a kid. That's the advantage of having such a white-meat character. When they finally go all in, they look like the biggest goon. Although, that one time Flash came out of nowhere to go HAM on Lex was probably my favorite moment of the entire show. A lot of people tout this scene as a seminal Superman moment, but I can't stand it. Clark talks tough, but he still gets his ass kicked by Darkseid in the end and needs to be saved by Batman and, even worse, Lex Luthor.

Most of the time when people talk about the Clark Kent/Superman thing, the Clark Kent they're referring to is the one from the Christopher Reeves movies. That version of Clark Kent always came off as somebody who doesn't understand humans that well trying to imitate them. It's basically a alien playing human black face. It also doesn't really line up with any major interpretation I've seen of the character for the last 30 years.

Superman FINALLY "cuts loose and shows how powerful he really is", and thirty seconds later he's writhing in pain on the ground and Lex Luthor gets to be the hero instead.
